J. - Age 52, committed suicide at his home north of town, by shooting himself through the heart with a pistol. He had been confined to his room for the past several days, and had a physician with him Friday morning when he shot himself that afternoon. He was quite despondent over his condition; then came the death of his bosom friend W. B. Weaver, with whom he had worked and been closely associated with for the past several years. Between 4:30 and 5 o'clock, he wanted to walk around in the yard; his wife was more or less disturbed about his condition and insisted on going out with him; they walked around a little and he stepped into the closet; his wife heard a shot shortly thereafter, and he was found with a bullet through his heart, a 38 caliber pistol lying by his side. Born and reared at Atworth, Georgia, moving to this county about thirty-five years ago. He served as superintendent at the Crush Brick and Tile plant for a number of years, and at the time of his death was superintendent of the Peoples' Cotton Oil Mill. He leaves a wife and four children, three boys and one daughter: Tom, Will, Oscar, and Miss Jewell. The funeral services were conducted at the City cemetery by Rev. Russell B. Whiteside, under the auspices of Odd Fellows Lodge. (Sulphur Springs Gazette, Aug. 1915)
