Carroll lived about three miles west of Cumby. Was attacked Tuesday night by an unknown person. The motive was presumably robbery, as about $3.75 in money was missing from the clothes of Mr. Carroll, and two bureau drawers were on the floor with their contents scattered. He was given medical attention by a local physician and found, while very painful, was not considered serious. Sheriff Akers of Greenville and he started an investigation, but was unable to discover any trace of the person committing the deed. The home of Mr.Carroll is a short distance from the railroad, and it is thought possible that the criminal made his escape by boarding an east- bound freight train that passed a short time after the crime was committed. (Cumby Rustler, Fri. Jan. 19, 1917) Later report - Died Sunday after an effort had been made to save his life by an operation. This is one of the saddest occurrences we have been called upon to print in recent years. It was thought he had been robbed while asleep and then assaulted with an ax. He was badly cut on the face and head. After more through examination, it was found that he had been dealt a crushing blow on top of the head with a blunt instrument, crushing in the skull and injuring his brain. There was a little hope from an operation, but the hope soon vanished, death resulting before many hours. Mrs. Carroll had been arrested before his death and taken to jail in Greenville, where she still remains. What the evidence is and what steps will be taken, we do not know. Mr. Carroll's body was buried at Friendship.
