All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** From the files of June Tuck CHANDLER, WILLIAM M. - (Grand Saline paper) - 92 years old, died Monday night at the home of his daughter in Sulphur Springs. Funeral services were held at Creagleville, with interment in the Creagleville cemetery. Mr. Chandler, or Uncle Bill, as he was known through out Van Zant county, was one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War. He served in that conflict as a Federal Soldier as a member of the 144th Infantry from Illinois. Born at Vandalia, Illinois, he grew to manhood in that state and he could recall having heard Abraham Lincoln speak on several different occasions. He came to Texas about fifty years ago and for nearly twenty years he farmed south of Canton. Thirty- three years ago he moved to Grand Saline and for a number of years he operated a transfer station there. During the past nine years he has been at the home of his daughter. The deceased is survived by five children: Mrs. Allie Monk, Quinlan; Mrs. Mary Carniline, Sulphur Springs; Mrs. Pearl Ingram, San Antonio; Steve Chandler, Grand Saline, and Jeff Chandler. Mr. Chandler's wife died here about thirteen years ago. (Hopkins Co. Echo 1934)
