R. J. CROSS, aged 60, died at his home in Ridgeway at an early hour Wednesday morning after more than three years of suffering from kidney troubles culminating in Bright^Òs disease. He was an early resident of Cumby, and before taking up the practice of medicine was engaged as a blacksmith, working as a partner with "Uncle" Wynn Senter for nine years or more. He was a native of Alabama, coming to Texas in 1869, and had been a communicant of the Cumby Baptist Church since 1884. Dr. Cross had been married twice; his first wife being Nannie A. Beckham, to whom he was married at Tyler, Texas, about forty years ago. Five children resulted from this union as follows: Kate, Sue, Ruby, and son, Paul, another son died when 5 years old, and the youngest died in infancy. His second marriage was to Miss Hattie Friedly in Cumby. To them, also, five children were born, namely, Rena, the oldest, married Joe Lowe. She died several years ago, the husband still living. Those living are Walter Cross, Ridgeway; Fred Cross, Emory, Rains County; Kyle Cross, Cumby. Dr. Cross^Ò body was brought over from Ridgeway and laid to rest in the local cemetery. The funeral under auspices of the Masonic Lodge was from the Baptist Church. Rev. Walter Bassett of Sulphur Springs conducted the service. (Cumby Rustler, Fri., Aug. 22, 1913)
