C. V. - General Robert Murray Henderson passed away in this city, March 14, 1909, this camp has lost a true and tried friend. Our dead comrade was born at Hennington, Carroll Co., Tennessee, Feb. 18, 1842, and moved to Texas with his father’s family in 1856. He was among the very first to respond the call of his country. In 1861, at Paris, Texas, he volunteered in Co. A, 9th Texas Regiment of Infantry, and was with his command until he fell severely wounded at the bloody battle of Shiloh and lay upon the field until captured and made prisoner by the enemy. As soon as he was exchanged he rejoined his command and was made Adjutant of his regiment in which capacity he served to the close of the war, after which he went into law office of R. & S. R. Maxley & Long. In 1870, he came to Sulphur Springs and became one of the proprietors and editors of the Sulphur Springs Gazette, was then connected with S. G. Tomlinson in the land business, then a banker, then United States Internal Revenue Collector under Cleveland’s first administration. In 1901, his former comrades in arms recognizing in him his many high qualities as soldier and Christian conferred on him the rank of brigadier general of the 4th Brigade of U. C. V. His devoted wife, and only daughter and sons, and brothers have our kindest sympathies. Committee: B. W. Foster, Jno. R. Fergerson, W. J. Ingram. Later report - He was 67 years of age. Funeral services were conducted at the family home on Church Street by Rev. E. H. Casey of Greenville, formerly pastor of the First Methodist Church of this place. ( Sulphur Springs Gazette)
