Mason was born in Virginia, July 29, 1852, and died at his residence in Hopkins County, Texas, on the night of Jan. 10, 1883; his death resulting from a gun shot wound received by the hand of an assassin the night previous. The deceased came to this county during infancy, and has resided here continuously ever since. On Feb. 1, 1872, he led to the hymenal alter Miss Jane Clapp. Their married life proved to be one of unusual felicity. On the fate ful night when he received his mortal wound, he was sitting around the fireside holding sweet communion with his interesting family, and when the assassin called his name he arose with his usual cheerfulness and prepared to answer what he presumed to be a neighbor’s call. For the next moment he was reddening the soil of his own home with his life’s blood. Dr. Becton imparted the sad intelligence to him that he must die, and he received it without a murmur, and calmly gave his heart-broken wife directions about his temporal affairs. Truly a good man has fallen. ( Thursday, Jan. 18, 1883)
