He enlisted in Capt. Perrins Co. A, 13th Mississippi Cavalry, commanded by Col. Perrins of Ferguson's Brigade, and Stephen D. Lee's Division. He was in the campaign of the Big Black and Vicksburg and Jackson, also with the Tennessee army in the Georgia campaign. He was surrendered in South Carolina, May 25, 1865. (Mat Ashcroft Camp Resolution, dated February 21, 1908) Died at the home of his son, John C. McDonald. He was born in Mississippi sixty-two years ago, came to Hopkins County in 1866 and located in Hopkins county in 1867. For more than forty years, he was a member of the Presbyterian church. At the tender age of 16, he cast his fortunes with the Southern Confederacy, enlisted in Co. A, 13th Mississippi Regiment and was a faithful soldier till the surrender in 1865. Those to mourn his lost are his companion, Mrs. Lou McDonald, of this city, and his sons, R. E. McDonald, of Stamford, and John C. McDonald of this City. The funeral services were held from the residence of the family home with interment in the City cemetery. (Sulphur Springs Gazette)
