All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ------------------------------------------------ Meredith, J. C. - Former citizen of Hopkins County, died this past week in New Mexico. The remains were brought back to Brashear where funeral services and burial took place. He was born February 7, 1859, in Alabama, moving with his parents from that state to Louisiana when 5 years old. When seven years old he lost his father and lived with and made a home for his widowed mother until he was 28 years old, but moved to Nevada, Texas, with her at age of 18. At age of 28, he was married to Mattie E. Thompson of that place who passed away at Brashear, Texas, October 24, 1904. Ten children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy, and one, John Meredith, lived to age of six when he died in 1903, also at Brashear. The remaining five boys and one girl are: T. L. Meredith, Tulsa, Okla.; J. C. Meredith, Jr., San Angelo, Texas; Maude Stovall, Belleview, New Mexico, at whose home the deceased passed away at on September 4, 1935; Marion A. Meredith, Rual B. Meredith, and R. V. Meredith, all of Roswell, New Mexico; also a sister, Mrs. Josie A. Allen, Culleoka (sic), Texas. The deceased was very devoted to his mother, who, after his marriage, continued to make her home with him and his wife until her death at Brashear in November 1903.
