Payne, near Weaver on last Friday evening of paralysis. "Uncle John," as he was familiarly known, was one the pioneers of Hopkins county, coming here when the country was almost an unbroken wild. In the eventful sixties he had the distinction of standing for Southern rights and as a faithful soldier was always found on the firing line of duty. At the ripe age of 78, he has been gathered home. At grave side, Rev. F.H. Hollis, of Saltillo told of the reward awaiting the faithful. He was laid to rest by his Masonic brotherhood. (Sulphur Springs Gazette, Fri., Jly. 30, 1915)
