Shewood, Oct. 27, 1916 when the new Methodist church was being built.) F. M. Rogers was born in Robertson County, Tennessee, May 10, 1826. He was reared in Carroll County, Tennessee, and in Tippah County, Mississippi, moving to Texas and locating in Sulphur Springs when but ten years of age. For many years he was engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1860 was elected chief justice of this county and held this office until removed by Federal authority in 1865 and disfranchised. His political disabilities were removed in 1874, and in 1876 he was elected County Judge of the county, which office he held for a number of years. He was known throughout Texas as an able jurist. He was president of the trustees of Central College, at this place, and was one of the most active and influential members of the Methodist Church during his lifetime. His death occurred March 31, 1895. He was Superintendent of the Sunday School here for over thirty years. (Sulphur Springs Gazette, Oct. 27, 1916) Later reported - He was initiated in Masonry, passed and raised in Mississippi in 1847. He was the first Worshipful Master of this Lodge in Sulphur Springs, and presided over it for many years.
