All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** From the files of June Tuck SMITH, MINNIE E., MRS. - Cumby, Hopkins Co., Texas, Feb. 26, 1924 - Kinswoman of President Polk dies in Greenville - Mrs. Minnie E. Smith, who died at the family residence in Greenville, was born at Cumby (Old Black Jack Grove) Jan. 12, 1869. Her father, Dr. R. B. Dickson, who died in 1885, was a physician of unusual intellect and commanded a large practice in the Cumby section, holding a high rank in the medical profession in Hopkins County. He also was a prominent Mason. Her ancestors came from North Carolina. Her grandfather was a cousin of President James Knox Polk. Her father and mother immigrated from Arkansas to Texas shortly after the Civil War. For many years Mrs. Smith took an active part in the work of the Eastern Star and the Rebekahs, and one year was chief presiding officer in one of these bodies and next to the highest in the other. She was married to Dr. Oscar Smith in 1885. The latter was a prominent physician in Hopkins County, and became one of the wealthiest men in this section. They moved from Cumby to Dallas four years ago, but after a residence there for two years moved to this place. Mrs. Smith is survived by her two daughters, one son, two sisters, and one brother. Funeral services were held here and the body buried in the old Cumby Cemetery. (Dallas Morning News, Feb. 27, 1924)
