Ricker Dies Big Spring Big Spring. Rupert P. Ricker, 75, who cracked open the secret of the Permian Basin and opened avenues of vast wealth to the University of Texas, died here today. )He was a former resident of Corsicana and a graduate of CHS) Ricker blocked nearly 500,000 acres which he turned at a personal financial loss to get a well drilled on the university land in West Texas. Climaxing a saga with overtones of a fairy story, Texon Oil Co. N. 1 Santa Rita blew in unexpectedly May 38, 1923 and took the university from rags to riches. The well is in Reagan County west of Big Lake. Although he realized nothing but satisfaction from his big venture, Ricker made and lost two fortunes in the oil business later. Over the past two decades he had practiced law and dealt in oil leases here, in addition to devoting much time as a lay preacher. The Permian Basin covering much of West Texas and eastern New Mexico is one of the world's greatest oil and gas producing regions. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Ricker; two sons, R. Paul Ricker of Midland and Prince Ricker of Garden City, Tx; two daughteres, Mrs. David Rogers of Redlands, CA, and Mrs. John Benson of Big Spring; and a sister, Mrs. J.B. Whisenant of Long Beach Calif. Services will be held Monday.
