Orville McGuire, and later by Alfred McGuire, was used in preparing the street markers. The original of these maps dates to 1885 when the City of Celeste was laid out with forty blocks by the engineer of the Santa Fe Railway when it was built from Dallas to Paris, crossing the MKT at this place. An original map, used in advertising the sale of lots, April 19, 1885, by the Railroad (now in the possession of Jess McGuire), had the streets’ names as they are known today. The railway engineers named the streets. The town was named Celeste, honoring a railway official’s daughter. Lion planners found that some existing streets had no names, having been added since the plotting in 1885. Those given names are Granberry and Clark streets, named for longtime residents, on the extreme north side of town. Elm and Maple are street names on the east side of the railway intersection. Aluminum house numbers are to be placed on residences, the Lions Club clearing the cost by charging a fee for the installation. (October 26, 1962, The Celeste Courier)
