The sycamore tree that was planted in 1897 by the members of the graduating class of that year, was removed last week by the FFA boys. It had stood as a memorial to the three class members of which the late Mrs. N. A. Barnard was a member. The drought of the last summer together with the nearby excavations caused its death. It had been given an appropriate location in the architect's plans and will be missed as an old friend in that popular corner of our new building and grounds. The beautiful redbud trees that reached to and above our second story windows will be missed this spring. The Sophomore Class of 1933-1934 with Mr. Charles Dupre as sponsor, planted the redbuds, the Arizona cypress, and other foundation plantings. The Senior Class of 1933-1934 planted the Italian cypress that flanked our doorsteps together with the nearby junipers. It has been said that "he who plants a tree lives for others." It may be that class groups, individuals, or organizations may be interested in a living contribution in the landscape plans around our lovely new building. (1957, Undated clipping, "The Blue Devils' Den," Donna Childress Haynes collection) The 1897 classmates were Bessie Braly, Beulah Norris (Barnard), Lem Patterson, Mrs. Mattie Posey. But I am sad to learn their donations were lost in the fire.)
