All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** Celeste Girls Lose to Alba - Golden in Bi - District, 53 - 42 The Celeste girls basketball team led Alba-Golden for most of three quarters at Sulphur Springs on Tuesday night then in the final period lost a 53 - 42 decision in a Class B bi-district playoff game. The Devilettes pulled to a three-point lead in the first period and maintained anywhere from a one to three-point lead until near the end of the third period. Alba-Golden pulled ahead one point, 35 - 34, going into the fourth period. Celeste lost the ball twice and a couple of untimely fouls put Alba-Golden ahead in the game to stay. Pat Roach of Celeste and Melba Robins of Alba-Golden locked up in a scoring duel and Robins came out on top with the night's high scoring output of thirty-one points. Roach hit twenty-six points. Celeste led 12 - 9 at the end of the first period and the two teams, Celeste of 43 - B and Alba-Golden of 44 - B, were tied 25 - 25 at halftime. As the third period opened, the taller Alba-Golden sextet began pressing the Celeste girls and several fouls on both teams prevailed from the closely fought contest. Alba-Golden was handed twenty fouls in the game and twenty-one fouls were called on Celeste. One of the turning points for the Celeste girls was when Roach fouled out of the game with 3:30 remaining in the final period. Robins left the game for Alba-Golden shortly after Roach in the final canto via the foul route. Martha Hackney followed Roach in the scoring department with ten points and Ann Hooten was second high for Alba-Golden with nineteen points. This was only the eighth loss for Celeste's girls who have won twenty-nine games this season as they copped the district 43 - B cage title. It was the thirty-first victory for Alba-Golden against only one loss. Alba-Golden will enter the regional tournament at Sherman this weekend. Wolfe City also advanced to the regional tourney at Sherman with a 42 to 28 victory over Savoy at Commerce on Tuesday night. (March 8, 1963, The Celeste Courier)
