All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** Celeste Students Win Eight Firsts In League Meet Pupils of the Celeste School came home from the District Interscholastic League meet last week with eight first place awards and one third place ribbon. Nine high school girls gave a one-act place, which received first place in the district. The play, "More Perfect Union," was directed by Mrs. W. R. Roach. Members of the cast were Frances McMichael, Nelda Davis, Claudette Grantham, Dorothy Lake, Delores Ramirez, Frances LaFavers, Betty Lou Martin, Peggy Compton, and Shirley Thornton. Bob Mayes won a blue ribbon in the extemporaneous speaking event. Other firsts went to Mickey Pierson, Ronnie Shields, Janie Armstrong, and Patsy Lewis for their declamations. These boys and girls are all pupils of Allegra Byers. Donnie Duncan and Georgeann Hackney comprised the team in the fifth and sixth grade spelling event. They won first place with only one of the team missing one word. Ellen Ann Winsett and Kay Armstrong won third place in the seventh and eighth grade spelling. The junior girls' softball team, coached by Mrs. Lois Lewis, won first place in the district. Church Hosts Senior Banquet The Women's Missionary Union of the Celeste first Baptist Church entertained Thursday evening with a banquet honoring the 1952 graduating class of the Celeste High School. The evening's entertainment began with a delicious dinner in the church's dining room. The tables were beautifully decorated with spring flowers and place cards and program booklets carried out the Easter motif. Following the invocation brought by Rev. Dick Lear, guests were welcomed by the host pastor, Rev. A. W. Cunningham. Speaking on behalf of the guests, J. R. Hunt, senior class president, gave a fitting response. After dinner, the guests assembled in the church sanctuary for an excellent program, which featured an address by Rev. Buell R. Crouch, pastor of Grace Temple Baptist Church in Dallas. Rev. Crouch's talk centered around "The Really Important Things in Life." Other numbers on the program included a song, "April Showers" by Claudette Grantham; a reading, "Thoughts on Graduation," by Frances LaFavers, and a piano duet by Frances McMichael and Nelda Davis. The program ended with a song, "High School Days," by the entire senior class. The guests included seniors J. R. Hunt, Claudette Grantham, Joy Dell Johnson,Billy Joe Jackson, Frances McMichael, Billy Ray Harris, Dorothy May Lake, Delores Ramirez, Nelda Davis, Doug Armstrong, Bob Mayes, Peggy Compton, Betty Lou Martin, and Frances LaFavers. Others present included Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Heflin, Mr. and Mrs.Hubert Shields, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Press, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Roach, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Dupre, Mrs. Agnes Breedlove, Mrs. Jestena Hunter, Miss Allegra Byers, Miss Mary Eastwood, Mrs. Lois Lewis, Joe Dorsett, Rev.
