The cover of the book is simply wonderful with a picture of the principal (I would assume), lovely artwork--trees, flowers, and a flowing brook. Below Mr. Whitehurst's picture is a set of library books and below that is the globe, lamps of learning burning brightly, a scroll, and the words, "The Price of Wisdom Is Above Rubies." The inside cover has these words: "To serve as a future reminder of our school associations, this souvenir, with best wishes of your teacher, is presented to you, believing that it will in the future, bring to mind pleasant memories of the past." The next page has a poem entitled "Truth" by Horatius Bonar and a quotation by Bulwer Lytton, "One of the most sublime things in the world is plain truth." The page opposite to the list of the students' names has the poem 'One Life To Live." The first line begins, "I shall not pass this way again, but far beyond earth's where and when, may I look back along a road where on both sides good seed I sowed." After the list of names is another poem about school. At the bottom is a sketch of a two-room (?) school building with school bell and flag. This eight-line poem concludes with "The blue sky above us is liberty's dome, the green fields beneath, is equality's home; the schoolhouse has proven humanity's friend, let us then the flag and the schoolhouse defend." No author is listed. The last page is titled "EDUCATION." In small print is, "Its function is to prepare us for a complete living." Continuing are these words, "It is the greatest lever of civilization, the gigantic mechanism of time, the grand dynamic force which has uplifted the people to a higher and nobler plane of civilization. It is the power that leads to success for the individual and the republic or kingdom and molds our future in a crucible of life." The booklet measures about 3 x 5, has four sheets, and is tied with a delicate blue ribbon which matches the colors used on the cover. I would gather that this was a type of school annual. Very lovely.
