All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ********************************************************** Ex-Student Gets Award We are very proud of Kathleen Quattlebaum and wish to congratulate her on her resent honor. Our story concerning her is taken from the "Commerce Daily Journal." Miss Kathleen Quattlebaum, a junior at East Texas State Teachers College, has been awarded the Mylie A. Maloney Scholarship given each year by Third District, Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, according to an announcement from Mrs. Henry Pharr, district Scholarship chairman. Miss Quattlebaum is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Quattlebaum, RR 2, Greenville. During her first year at East Texas State, she was elected to Alpha Lambda, honor society for freshmen women, and in her junior year has been elected to Alpha Chi, scholastic honor society for upper classmen. She was graduated from Celeste High School in 1953 as salutatorian of her class. While there, she was active in the music and dramatics clubs. Miss Quattlebaum is the youngest of her family. She has four sisters, and one brother. Her brother, C. C. Quattlebaum, Jr., entered East Texas State at the opening of this semester, having recently completed a tour of duty in the US Armed Services. When Miss Quattlebaum completes the work for her bachelor's degree with a major in social science, she plans to enter the University of Texas to study law. Third District, TFWC, awards three scholarships each year, one at ETSTC, one at Stephen F. Austin, Nacogdoches, and one at Tyler Junior College, to an outstanding student at each institution. Mrs. R. J. Jones and Mrs. W. Y. Goff served as local committee members. FHA The FHA girls met March 7 and selected Janie Armstrong and Marilyn Hopewell to attend the State FHA meeting in Fort Worth. Val Jean Atherton was chosen as alternate. Evelyn Childress Receives Award Celeste--Miss Evelyn Childress, a senior at Celeste High School and daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. Andrew Lyday of Kingston, has been selected to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Miss Childress has maintained an outstanding recording during her four years of high school. She has been a member of the pep squad for four years, serving one year as Texas Flagbearer and one year as American Flagbearer. In her junior year, she was class favorite. As the present time she is serving as secretary of the senior class and bookkeeper for the basketball teams. For four years, she has been an honor student and she has not missed a day of school for the last two years. Miss Childress is a member of the Kingston Baptist Church, where she is assistant secretary of the Training Union and secretary of the Intermediate Training Union class.
