All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** 1951 Word has been received here that Leonard Ray Porter, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Penny G. Porter, Sr., pioneer Celeste citizens has been promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain. Captain porter attended school at Kingston and Celeste and was a senior in high school at Bracketville, Texas, when he enlisted in the US Army as a private at Fort Clark, Texas, in October of 1938. He served in the Quartermaster Corps at Fort Clark until he was transferred to Camp Barkley, Abilene, Texas in 1941. He was later with the Quartermaster Detachment at the Enemy Alien Interment Camp at Stringtown, Oklahoma. During World War II, Captain Porter was Post Commander at Amacheta, Aleutian Islands. After returning to the States, he was stationed at Chicago, Illinois, at Fort Sheridan. In March of 1949, he was sent to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he served as an instructor in the Food Service School and was also finance and recreation officer for his company. Captain Porter attended Officer’s Candidate School at Camp Lee, Virginia, where he received his 2nd Lieutenant commission in 1946. In July of 1950, career-soldier Porter, was ordered from Fort Sam Houston to Korean War duty. He is serving with the 25th Infantry Division, 25th Quartermaster Corps on the Western Front in Korea. Captain Porter is married to the former Wanda Joy Fitzgerald of Oklahoma City. They have a four-year-old daughter, Brenda Carol Porter, and Mrs. Porter and Brenda Carol are making their home with her parents while Captain Porter is away. Captain Porter has often visited in the homes of his sisters, Mrs. J. M. Passons of Celeste and Mrs. Leon Hanson of Wolfe City. He is anticipating being returned to the States sometime in the latter part of October or November. (October 6, 1951) Joe Dan McMichael, hospital nurse, who has been in the US Navy for three and a half years, is now in the Navy Hospital at Corpus Christi and will be confined to his bed for the next three months. He is the son of Mrs. W. W. McMichael of this place. His address is: Joe D. McMichael, H. M., US Navy Hospital, Ward Med. III, Corpus Christi, Texas. (October 5, 1951) Sgt. Herbert Mulkey, formerly of Celeste and son of Mrs. Hessie Mulkey sailed last week for a tour of duty in the Far East. Sgt. Mulkey formerly was recruiting officer at Sherman. He served with the 36th Division in the European Theater during World War II. His wife and son are residing in Sherman. (October 5, 1951) Mrs. Jackie Don Sumrow is in San Antonio visiting her husband who is in the Air Force there at this time. (October 5, 1951) Captain and Mrs. Rex Denny, Jr., of Morehead City, North Carolina, announce the arrival of a baby daughter born October 5, 1951, at the Naval Hospital at Cherry Point, North Carolina. (October 12, 1951) Kenneth E. Griffis was recently promoted to Corporal. He made top honors in his company. He is now stationed with the US Army in Austria. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. T.
