Bobby Lee Griffis is home on a thirty-day furlough from Panama. He visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Starlin Griffis and his wife, Betty. Bobby and Betty are both Celeste graduates. Betty, who was Betty Long, finished in 1959 and Bobby Lee in 1955. Four of the sons of Starlin and Katie Griffis are now or have been in the US Army. Bill was in Panama for three years. He was Sgt. Billy C. Griffis, Tank Commander. He became interested in the people and problems there and is now preparing himself for the missionary work. He hopes that it will be in the Central American country. Billy Charles is training at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and has two years of schooling yet to complete. Sp.4 Jackie T. Griffis has been in Korea since August of 1960. His time is over there in September this year. This is Jackie Tom’s second hitch in the service. His wife is Janet Slatter Griffis. They have a two-month old son. M/Sgt. Kenneth E. Griffis has seen duty in several foreign lands during his years in the service since graduation from high school here in 1949. He is now at Fort Riley, Kansas. His job is training recruits. Kenneth and his wife, Lee, have two children, a boy and a girl, two and one year, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Griffis here, the parents, of these four husky men who find US Army service rewarding, have four children still at home. Stanley, who graduated in the spring of 1960, works here in a local service station. Anita Joyce is a pretty little junior in classification in school. Sammy, a good reader like his brother Charles, is a ninth grader, and Brenda is in the third grade. "If I can just get these last three through school-----," laughed Mrs. Griffis. It is well assured that she will and they will---for Katie Marie is always loyal, patient, and above all, hopeful. (March 24, 1961, The Celeste Courier)
