At this time a number of changes are being made. Some are leaving for the service; some are returning. Allen Biggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Biggs, left Tuesday, September 20, 1960, for induction in the US Army. He left from Greenville, but knew not where from there. Allen had been home a few days. He probably needed a rest for he has been a constant worker with Cage Brothers and M. C. Winters Construction Company since his high school graduation in 1956. The last two years his responsible position with this company has been in the Houston vicinity. While at home, though, Allen built a garage for his car at his father's home. We caught him in a relaxed mood, the one day prior to his departure, for he was T-Ving and enjoying the antics of his little nephew, Mike Lipsey. Johnny Morton and Modesto Rodriguez are already one month old inductees. They were sent to Fort Carson, Colorado for induction and are now at Fort Riley, Kansas. Johnny, a classmate of Allen's, has lived here with his mother, Mrs. Edd Morton and brother, Joe and family. He has had continuous work with Temco in Greenville. Modesto did four year's college work and one year of teaching before Uncle Sam called. He is of that family of Rodriguez--who graduated from Celeste-- then to the college in Commerce. Master Sergeant Kenneth Griffis and his family left here last Friday for Houston where Sgt. Griffis will assume duties as an ROTC instructor in Melva High School in Houston. His assignment there is for three years. Mrs. Griffis, who was Frances LaFavers, and the three children, Cathy, Ken, and Donald, have made their home here for several months while the children attended school. Sgt. Griffis was last stationed at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma. This Army career family has lived in both Germany and Hawaii, as well as California. Donald, the youngest, was born in California. Soon to return, in fact next month, is Ted Daniels, who has soldiered in Germany for eighteen months. The days can't go by quickly enough for his wife, Joan Shields Daniels, and little daughter, Cindy. Mr. and Mrs. Haskell Biggs entertained with a dinner on last Sunday evening, September 18, 1960, for their son, Allen, who left Tuesday for the US Army. Those present were Miss Betty Moore of Dallas, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Ray Norris of Greenville, Allen's grandmothers, Mrs. Minnie Biggs and Mrs. Lizzie Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Lipsey and Mike, all of Celeste. Attends Funeral Relatives from here who attended the funeral services for Mr. E. H. Watson in Commerce on Sunday, September 16, were Mr. and Mrs. Rankin Roach and Sydne, Mrs. Tom Sparks, Mrs. Ira Hunter, and Miss Jonnye Joe Hunter. Relatives from away who attended and were also in the Pierce and Roach homes here were Mr. and Mrs. Don Epperley and I. H. Roach of Fort Worth and Mrs. and Mrs. Bob Isbel of Irving. Also Mr. and Mrs. Billy Tom Roach of Robert Lee, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roach of Sherman, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Paschall of Dallas. Earlier this week, Mrs. Roach Arnold of Midland visited in the home of Mrs. Josie Pierce. Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Jess Gibson had visitors at intervals from Friday through Sunday. There were Mr. and Mrs. George Owens from Peniel and their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Owens and family of San Antonio. Also, Mrs. Kate Keller of Greenville and Mrs. Cas Mations of Peniel. From Garland, the visitors were Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Sumrow. From this vicinity, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Leinart and the Cloyd Gibson family called. The Gibson's nice east porch, shaded by those large persimmon trees makes an ideal place to gather on an Indian Summer day. Mr. Bobby Prather of Hobbs, New Mexico spent Tuesday night with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lacy. Bobby is a cousin of Theda. Mr. and Mrs. Houston Furr had as guests this week, Mrs. Furr's sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Mallow of Lawton, Oklahoma. Mrs. Mallow, who was Miss Lola Jones before her marriage, was a former teacher at Hogeye School as well as other nearby schools. Mrs. Mallow did not get to attend the recent homecoming at Hogeye that drew former teachers, friends, and residents. Other Oklahoma visitors in town Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Thompson of Denison and their mother, Mr. H. W. Thompson of Rattan, Oklahoma. The latter Mrs. Thompson is the daughter of Mrs. Ada Chiles, whose home was here for many years. The house, destroyed by fire while occupied by the Joe LaFavers family, was the former home of the late Mrs. Chiles. The visitors were accompanied by the Joe McKees to the Dulaney Cemetery to visit the family burial ground. Others guests of the Joe McKees were Mrs. McKee's brother, John Williams of Sulphur Springs and his grandson, Larry Hudson. Elbert and Jerry Hunt journeyed to Ore City over the weekend to visit the Bill Blythes. The boys reported that Tommie, the children, and "Professor" Blyth are all nicely settled and like their new home. Bill is a natural born teacher from all appearances and reports he likes teaching and especially his coaching duties there. Incidentally, the above title was not affixed by the young brothers-in-law! Correction Mr. George W. Childress was reported as C. C. Childress in a summer report of visitors in his home. Mr. Childress' late bother of Lane was C. C. Childress. Since Mr. George is an interested watcher of all things political, teachers of Texas history probably think of him when they teach about an early Texan, George C. Childress who was the author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. College bound people were mentioned last week. We omitted Jim Haynes. Sorry! Jim is a junior at East Texas and made quite a record last year scholastically and in public speaking. He, his wife Donna Childress Haynes, and son James Parker, are living now in Commerce, but have been here with her parents, the R. C. Childress family for several months while Donna worked locally and Jim commuted to school. In listing the new babies of former Celeste people, we missed two who were born within the month of August 8 to September 8. They are Roy Clifton, Jr., born August 31, 1960, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Clifton Chambliss, who live at Kingston. Mrs. Chambliss was Betty Lamm. Also, Chester Curtis, born August 23, 1960, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Sanders of RR 2, Greenville. Mrs. Curtis was LaWanda Lamm of Kingston, one of the "perfect attendance at school" Lamms. LaWanda and others made that record, but some have not been so noted. There are still Joe and Tommy Lamm in school. It was mentioned that the two new babies arrived just in time so that they would be scholastics in 1966, with no loss of time.
