Mrs. Bruce was honored with a party given by her fellow workers at the downtown post office. She was pictured in the September 4, 1961 "Dallas Times Herald" as she appeared at the party in her honor, surrounded by gifts, wearing an orchid corsage, and looking lovely and happy. Mrs. Bruce went to Dallas with her two young daughters and began work in the Dallas Post Office February 15, 1918, at a salary of thirty-five cents an hour, "small pay with hours long, living expenses high and no raises." She pointed out last week that working conditions have changed drastically. Her comments concerning her pleasant contacts with customers at the retail stamp window for fourteen years, reflect her friendliness and love for people. She commented further that millions of questions were answered including the inquires as to "whether or not stamps could be purchased wholesale cheaper than retail." A window for the sale of stamps wholesale would provide the impetus for the question. Mrs. Bruce was the youngest of eight children of the parents deceased many years ago, Colonel and Mrs. P. G. Carter, who were pioneers in the Prosperity community. All of the eight children were reared here and educated in this area. Col. Carter was a Civil War Veteran. Mrs. Carter was Margaret Cameron, a member of a Greenville pioneer family. Lake was a post office employee here in the Celeste Post Office while the late Ed Thompson was Postmaster. She was married to Mr. Walter Bruce of Celeste and Lane. Mr. Bruce was the youngest of three sons of a Lane and Celeste pioneer doctor, Dr. G. T. Bruce. Mr. Bruce passed away while the two daughters were small. They were Layla Margaret Bruce and Frances Bruce, now both married and living in Dallas and California, respectively. Lake's young granddaughter in Dallas provides her with pleasant hours while babysitting. Mrs. Bruce attended the Homecoming two weekends ago here, her past life and work and interest in her new leisure ahead, were homecoming talk. It is safe to assume that all will not be leisure for her life has been too busy. Her spare time in Dallas saw her active in the First Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, and the United Federation of Post Office Clerks. CHS Class of 1909 The Celeste graduates of 1909, all four of them, continue to meet annually for a class reunion. They are Mrs. Lou U. (Mitchell) Kelly, Mrs. Ellen (White) McGuire, Mrs. Ovie (Norman) Wilson, and Mrs. Lake (Carter) Bruce.
