Injured Texan Refuses To Die

Temple, Tex. (AP) -- Byron G. Stolp, 56, says "I'm just not
going until the Lord gives the word."
Three years ago a heavy truck ran over his head and he survived.
Last week-- on Good Friday-- his heart stopped on the 
operating table. The surgeon opened his chest and massaged
the hear. Four minutes after it had stopped, the heart was
pumping again.
If his heart had stopped much longer, doctors said, Stolp either
would have died or suffered permanent brain damages.
Stolp is a former crane operator from Belton, Tex. He was
interviewed by the Temple Telegram yesterday. Doctors
wouldn't allow newsmen to see him any earlier.
He looked spry and was smoking a cigarette. He put his false
teeth in when his picture was taken. "Can't give you a good 
grin without 'em," he explained.
Doctors were in the midst of an abdominal operation when his
heart stopped. The following morning Stolp grilled his doctors
about what happened.
"I wanted to know all about it," he said. "After all, I was 
unconscious when it happened."
The abdominal surgery still remains to be done, but Stolp isn't
worried. He's satisfied he won't die until God calls him.
Meanwhile he looks out through his hospital window into the
sunshine and grows wistful.
"My wife and I bought us a little fishing camp out on Belton
Reservoir a while back," he explained, "and I need to get
out there and tend to my business. I heard this morning that
they were really hauling the big bass out of the lake Sunday."
