CARTER A blast that occurred at 10:57 PM Wednesday set fire to the Beckham Hotel, a three-story Greenville landmark, and destroyed it and wrecked several other business houses. Joshua B. Cater, 72, a former resident of Celeste, was found by firemen face down in a bathroom on the third floor. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Schiff, owners of the hotel, were injured. M. E. Denberry, Tyler, was also injured. William Shippy, a permanent guest, was missing and was not located on Thursday. Several others were hospitalized. Several hours were required to bring the fire under control. The funeral for Mr. Carter was held this morning (Friday) at 11:00 at the Gray-Sorrells Funeral Chapel in Greenville conducted by the Rev. Neal Jones, pastor of he First Baptist Church in Greenville, and the Rev. Albert Click, pastor of the Celeste Methodist Church. Burial was made in the McWright Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe LaFavers, Monroe Passons, Albert Granberry, Jimmy Pearce, Tom Sparks, and Ernest Roach. Three brothers and three sisters survive. He was never married.
