(Lum) Compton, longtime resident of Celeste, was dead on arrival at Greenville Surgical Hospital on Saturday, July 1, 1961, at 9:00 AM. He apparently died of a heart attack. Funeral services were at 2:30 PM on Monday at the Celeste Baptist Church with the Rev. H. B. Gideon officiating. Interment was in the Celeste Cemetery under the direction of Coker-Mathews- Peters Funeral Home of Greenville. Born on March 23, 1888, in Celeste, Mr. Compton lived in Celeste all his life. He was the son of Mark Compton and Sarah Ann Thomson Compton. Mr. Compton was married to Belva Mulkey on February 13, 1910. He was a member of the Celeste Baptist Church and a deacon more than thirty years. Survivors include his wife of Celeste; five sons, Herman Compton of Celeste, Coy Compton of Houston, Tilman Compton of Greenville, Norris Compton of Lamesa, and Earl Compton of Lubbock; two daughters, Mrs. Lenna Belle Barr of Leonard and Mrs. Frances Woodruff of Trenton; five brothers, Harrison Compton, Monroe Compton, and Mack Compton of Celeste, Lester Compton of Dallas, and Vester Compton of New Mexico. Twenty-one grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews survive. One brother, Jim Compton, preceded him in death. Active pallbearers were Albert Granberry, Johnnie Lyon, Jack Ruff, Bill Harrell, Bill Barnard, and John George.
