Her LOVING SURVIVORS include a niece, Virginia Hammer of California, a cousin, William (Bill) E. Hammer of DeSoto, Texas and a great nephew. She is also survived by Alice Tabraham (her "adopted" daughter); Danny and Darren Tabraham ("adopted" grandsons); Wendy Tabraham ("adopted" granddaughter;) and a soon to be "adopted" great-granddaughter who she will see before we do in February. She was so looking forward to meeting this little one. She is also survived by a host of friends, former co-workers, and hundreds of friends and acquaintances whose lives she touched and they were all the better for having known her. One of her greatest loves for working for Bennett Printing Company (a/k/a Sammons Corporation) where she served as the manager/director of collections (a "man's" job at the time), but was loved and respected by the president as well as the other officers of Bennett. She retired in 1978. The other loves in Melba's life were her dogs - Corky, Buster and Tuffy. She loved her alley cats who found food and shelter in Melba's backyard. Her love of friends, animals, family and just working with others, including her church, and National Association of Credit Management, Dallas Wholesale Credit Women's Group, and Dallas Association of Credit Management made her one of the most loving, caring and giving women you would ever want to meet. She loved serving her community and her church, Wynnewood Baptist Church, where she was the social director of the Happy Hearts group along with many other multi-faceted positions. Melba grew up in Ladonia and Bonham, Texas where she lived with her grandparents. She graduated from Bonham High School. She enjoyed a very full and productive life, serving her community, her friends and many others who did not even know her. She was instrumental in obtaining crash helmets for the Dallas Police at a time when it seemed an impossible task. She was a member of the Daughters of America where she chaired many committees as well as serving as president. She was a member and served as president of Daughters of America; she was installed as Noble Grand of Victory Rebekah Lodge No. 106; and she was the recording secretary of Altrusa Club of Grand Prairie in 1955. She organized the AARP Chapter in Keller Springs. She has served in many capacities in organizations, on political committees and community service projects that they are too numerous to list. She loved to travel and working with the credit management organizations allowed her to travel throughout the nation. One of the highlights was being voted as Credit Executive of the Year, an honor bestowed upon her by the membership. She was awarded a plaque and a trip to Hawaii along with many other awards. She served as a director of Dallas Association of Credit Management, Inc. She presided at the National Association of Credit Management in New York. She was the President of Women's Credit Management Group. It was highly unusual for a WOMAN during that particular era to serve on or hold any type of position in the credit management field, but she fought for a man's job (which was certainly not vogue at that time) and WON, and she was extended all the privileges as those of the men. She was highly respected and admired by all. She published the "National Credit Women's Executive Committee Texas-Oklahoma Newsletter," which included her own column "Notes from Melba." She felt most honored for being "one of the fortunate fourteen of the National" who were selected to serve on NCWEC. She was known from California to Florida Canada to Mexico - including Hawaii - where new friendships were made and much knowledge gained. She said that these were PRICELESS. At a credit management dinner in San Diego, she met and sat with Ronald and Nancy Reagan, who promptly gave her an autographed picture. She met Bishop Sheen in Los Angeles, George Bush in Texas, Gerald Ford in Montreal, and Barry Goldwater in Florida. There are countless dignitaries she met along with congressmen and high-ranking officials. Anyone who ever met Melba will always remember that vivacious little Irish lady who got things done. If you had a cause or group project, she could handle it. She was a doer and a shaker and handled every detail of any project, program, dinner, tea, or just a fun get together. She said, "Just remember, HAPPINESS is for those who do not expect it every moment; who receive it as a gift; and who know how to live without it at times." Melba most definitely found happiness! She had countless special friends who will miss her. May the heavens celebrate with her arrival! We will always love you and miss you twinkling eyes and infectious laugh, your advice and your hugs and kisses, Mama Melba. Love, Alice, Danny, Wendy, and Darren (and soon-to-be little Avery).
