Hunt County, TX - M. J. Fox, obituary & estate records Saturday Feb. 23, 1918, Greenville Morning Herald, Greenville, Texas TAPS SOUNDED FOR A VETERAN M. J. FOX answered the final roll call early Friday. Friday morning at 1:15 M. J. FOX passed away at the home of L. R. WINTON and in his death Hunt County losses another of the band of brave soldiers of the Civil War. He was only ill for a few hours and was thought to be getting along well but death came to him suddenly. The funeral will begin from Mr. WINTON's home this afternoon at 1 o'clock and services will be held at the Caney Church, south of Campbell three miles upon arrival there. Rev. Spragins will conduct the services. Mr. FOX was 77 years of age. He was born in Illinois but came to Hunt County before the Civil War with his parents, who located on Caney creek and he continued to live there until 4 years ago, when he came to this city to reside with his relatives, Mr. And Mrs. WINTON. He never was married and belonged to no order except the Confederate Veterans. He volunteered here early in the war and saw service in Co. H. 11th Texas. He was a fine soldier and a man whose life was above reproach. He leaves a brother John Fox at Campbell, a sister in Arkansas and several nephews and nieces in the vicinity. The only relative at his bedside when death came was Mrs. WINTON. The bereaved have the sympathy of many friends in their sorrow. (*correction he was born in Wayne County, Tenn. GATES, COUNTY JUDGE: Now comes L. J. WINTON, joined by her husband, L. R. WINTON, and with respect shows to the court: 1. The M. J. FOX departed this life interstate on the 22nd day of February, 1918, in Hunt County, Texas. 2. That at the time of his death, the said M. J. FOX was seized and possessed of a certain estate consisting of money, notes and choses in action, of the value of Twelve Hundred Dollars (12,000.00) 3. That at the date of his death, the said M. J. FOX was indebted to divers and sundry persons, to wit: L. R. WINTON and wife, L. J. WINTON, in the sum of Five Hundred & Forty Dollars ($540.00); to J. A. FOX in the sum of Thirty Dollars ($30.00), and that his said estate is indebted for the expense of his burial and last sickness; that the notes and choses in action owing to said M. J. FOX are due and unpaid, and that the indebtedness owing by the estate of said FOX is due and unpaid, and that there exists a necessity for an administration upon the estate of the said M. J. FOX. Wherefore, the said L. J. WINTON and husband, L. R. WINTON, pray that W. H. JAMES be appointed temporary administrator of the estate of the said M. J. FOX, with authority to collect such indebtedness as may be due said estate; that said W. H. JAMES is in no way disqualified from accepting letters of administration; that upon final hearing hereof, said temporary administrator be appointed permanent administer.
