Mercer of this city was stricken with heart failure and died. He was 54 years of age and had been an engineer on the Shreveport branch of the Katy for about thirty-four years. He is survived by his widow, four sons and one daughter. The funeral of the late Joseph D. Mercer was held at the family residence on West Henry street at 8:30 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev. W. E. Graham, pastor of the Grace Presbyterian Church of this city. At 9:30 a.m. the remains, accompanied by the friends of deceased and members of his family, left for Jefferson on a special train furnished by the Katy Railroad to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for this occasion, the deceased having been a member of that lodge. The burial took place today in the Jefferson Cemetery and the special train conveying the funeral party returned to Greenville this evening after the burial.
