Mayo, of Commerce, died Wednesday unexpectedly and was attributed to heart failure. He was one of the founders of East Texas Normal College, and was president of the institution at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and five children. (Cumby Rustler, Fri., March 16, 1917) Later reported - The body entombed in a concrete vault on the college campus northeast of the Administration Building, in compliance with a request of the deceased. He was the founder of the East Texas Normal College which was established at Cooper more than a quarter of a century ago. After the building burned, he moved to Commerce, where more encouragement was offered to re-establish the institution.
