J. C. Rhea, one of the oldest pioneers of Texas, died on the 3d instant. He was born in Tennessee in 1811; married in Ashville, Ala., in 1835; moved to Bowie county (now Cass county) Texas in 1839, and from there to Hunt county in 1863, when Hunt was a border county. Capt. Rhea served the people of Cass county in the capacity of sheriff for sixteen or eighteen years. He was a consecrated member of the church for fifty years. Capt. Rhea was a brother-in-law of the old alcalde, ex-Gov. O. M. Roberts.
