All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************** John Walter Sparks Celeste--John Walter Sparks, an elderly man who lived by himself near Celeste, was found dead at his home Tuesday afternoon by a neighbor who went looking for him after he had failed to be seen for four days at the grocery in Celeste where he traded. Justice of the Peace Homer Wacasey conducted an inquest and rule that death was from natural causes. He said Mr. Sparks, who was believed to be in his 80's had been dead about three days when his body was discovered. The discovery of the body was reported to the Hunt County Sheriff's Department at 4:26 PM. He was a retired farmer and lived about three miles southwest of Celeste (CR 1091). Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Coker-Mathews-Peters Funeral Home in Greenville. Survivors include a son of Dallas, a daughter of Bay City and a brother-in-law, Tommy Waters, of Emory. (April 3, 1968, The Greenville Herald Banner) John Walter Sparks Celeste--John Walter Sparks, 83, died at 12:05 PM Sunday, March 31, 1968, at his home on RR 3, Celeste. Funeral services, under the direction of Coker-Mathews-Peters, will be held at 2:00 PM today with Rev. Bob Layman officiating. Burial will be at Rosemound Cemetery, Commerce. Mr. Sparks was born December 21, 1884, in Celeste, the son of Lawrence John Sparks and Hazel Pony Sparks. On December 22, 1913, he married the former Stella Fox. The former farmer and teacher was a member of the Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his widow; two sons, Col. Belmont E. Sparks of Los Angeles, California and L. J. Sparks of Commerce; a daughter, Mrs. H. G. Boynton of Baytown; three brothers, A. B. Sparks of Sulphur Springs, T. J. Sparks of Dallas, and Lawrence Benjamin Sparks of Fort Worth; and a sister, Effie Lee McDaniel of Clovis New Mexico. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
