Stephens, well known in Confederate circles throughout Hunt County, died at the home of his son in Celeste last Saturday. Mr. Stephens had gone from his home in Wolfe City to visit his sons, Charlie Stephens and Neuborn Stephens in Celeste, was taken seriously ill and was never able to return home. Deceased came to Texas from Itawamba County, Mississippi in 1880 and settled near Wolfe City where he has lived and prospered for the past twenty- seven years. He was prominent in the councils of the Baptist Church, the Confederate camps, and local politics and Wolfe City has sustained the loss of one of her best citizens in his taking away. In addition to his two sons at Celeste, he leaves a widow and a daughter, Mrs. Griffis, of Wolfe City to mourn his loss. (April 5, 1907, The Greenville Messenger) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1790 there was a Zachariah Stephens in Johnston County in the Newbern District. Is this where the Newburn (Newbern) name started? Albert A. Stephens. I believe Albert Stephens parents were Green S. Stephens, 41, and Mary E. Stephens 36, living at 1201 - 1211 in Itawamba County, Mississippi, in 1860. Albert Stephens was 17. They were all born in Alabama. Albert's siblings were George M., 16, AL; Permilia A., 15, MS; and Mary F., 4, MS. Sophia Langston was also in the household. In the next few households are Zachariah Stephens, 22, AL, and his family; James M. Stephens, 39; AL and his family; Redin B. Stephens, 33, AL; and Zachariah Durrett and his family. Zachariah Stephens, 66, NC and his family and Abel, 43, SC, and John R. Stephens, 35, AL--are also nearby. This was in 1860 in Cummingsville, Itawamba County, Mississippi. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Albert Stephens, 26, was living in Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi in 1870. His wife, Eliza, 22, was also from Alabama. The children were Charles, 2, and Zachariah 6/12, both born in Alabama, according to this census. They must have recently moved here. In the household are Martha Durseth (?) 16, and Isabella Durseth (?), both born in Mississippi. Next door are Zachariah Stephens, 76, from North Carolina and Lelitha 74, from South Carolina. A new houses away is Mary Stephens, 37. In her home are Mary,13, and Charles, 9. They were both born in Mississippi. Next door to Mary is Samuel Stephens, 26, born in Alabama. His wife is Malinda, 18, from Mississippi. They have Tennessee, 3, born in Mississippi. William McNutt, 21, from Mississippi, and Iva Durrett (or Durseth), 25, from Alabama are also in the home. A few houses away is Abel Stephens, 56, from South Carolina. His wife is Annie, 47, from Tennessee. Their children are Louiza, 18, and Green, 16--both born in Mississippi. Mary McNutt, 18, from Mississippi, is in the home. This is Fulton Post Office, Itawamba Mississippi, in 1870. Other Stephens there at this time are Ann, 17, MS; Daniel, 25, MS; James, 50, AL; John, 53, TN; Johnathan, 46, AL: Josh, 46, AL; Marg, 13, MS; Mark, 77, SC; Robert, 28, MS; Samuel 26, SC; and William 26, MS. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1900, Albert A. Stephens, 57, was born in May of 1843, in Alabama. Both his parents were born there as well. He was married to Eliza, 52, born in January of 1848. They were married in about 1865. Eliza had given birth to five children, four living. Azelee, 14, daughter, was born in April of 1886, in Texas. Mary Stephens, his mother was born in Mary, 76 (?) of 1824 (?) in Alabama. I think both her parents were born in Virginia. She had given birth to six children, four living. Reuben Heorse, Otto Vollout from Germany, and Bessie Mitchell were laborers in their household. The Stephens household was at 159 - 159, Precinct 5, Hunt County, Texas, on June 15, 1900, enumerated by Marcus D. Stephenson. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles G. Stephens, 32, was living on Third Street in Celeste at household 61 - 61 in 1900. He was born in December of 1868 in Mississippi. He was a Celeste druggist. He was married to Annie L., 25, for four years. Annie was born in Texas; her father, Mississippi; her mother, Alabama. Their only child was Mary E., 3, born in January of 1896. His brother, Newburn Z. Stephens , 30, lived on Marsalis Street at household 55 - 55. He had just gotten married to Alice, 25, born in October of 1874. She was born in Texas; both her parents were born in Alabama. Newburn was a druggist as well. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1910, Eliza Stephens, 63, widow, was born in Mississippi. She had given birth to three children, all living. A granddaughter, Bessie Sanders (?) was living with her. Bessie was twenty and single. She was born in Texas. He father was born in South Carolina; her mother Ohio. (?) Also at this time, Sam M. Stephens, 67, born in Alabama and his wife Mary M., 58, Mississippi, were living in Wolfe City. He was the Justice of the Peace. They had been married forty-two years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newburn Z. Stephens, Sr., 39, was living on Fourth Street in Celeste. He had been married first for ten years to Alice, 36. This was her second marriage. Newburn was a retail drugs merchant. Alice had given birth to five children, two surviving: Lois, 8, and Newburn Z., 8/12. Annie Hidor was a fifteen-year old servant. This was April 21, 1910. ---
