The family later moved to Bib County, Alabama where Arthur married Dorotha Callaway Gardner on 21 Dec 1830. Arthur and Dorotha "Dolly" moved first to Autauga County then to Coosa County, Alabama, then to Smith County, Texas around 1840-1845. Arthur became the 2nd County Judge of Smith County. Their children were Agrippa, Athalona, John, Newton, Appleton, Nancy Emaline, Mary Ann, Martha Jane, Thomas J., Eli W., Lee, and Mahala C. Dorotha died in 1852 and Arthur died in 1863. Newton, wife Clarissa an infant daughter are in Smith County, Texas in 1850. Newton's wife, Clarissa died giving birth to their 7th child. Clarissa, the infant, her young, newly wed daughter Mary Jane and her infant son, Fletcher Monroe Atkinson are buried in Crawford Cemetery in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Newton and his family came to Keechi Valley, (9 miles S. of Jacksboro) Jack County in 1856 where he acquired a large ranch and several farms. One of their nearest neighbors in the Keechi area was the Aaron Lasater family. Newton believed in the future of the cattle industry and began to buy cattle and increase his herd. In 1871, Newton sold his entire herd (Brand 96) to the Curtis Bros. for $12,000 then immediately purchased 200 heifers of one and two years old. His brand after 1871 became "NEW". The Indians made frequent raids and he had several fights, including the Reservation Fight of 1859 where his bedmate was slain, with them. He took part in all phases of life in the county. He served on the committee to build the sand stone courthouse and jail, and also the commission for the laying out of the town lots of Jacksboro. He was a Lieutenant with the Texas Rangers, Company S, at Fort Richardson, during the Civil War. Newton served on the grand jury that indicted the Indians, Santanta and Big Tree. Newton and his 2nd wife moved to Jack County from Palo Pinto soon after their marriage in 1863. They were members of the Baptist Church. In the 1880s the family moved into the town of Jacksboro. Mary Eleanor Keith, sister to Elizabeth Susan Keith, married Isom Lynn, a descendant of the Cambern/Mason Murders of 1858. They were the daughters of James Porter and Elizabeth Keith. Della Linla Watson m. 16 Jul 1899 b. 03 Sep 1876 d. 01 May 1968 Della Linla Watson and Lee Arthur Atkinson married at Jacksboro, Jack County, Texas where he was born. Della Linla, daughter of Joseph Huddleston & Emily M. (Womack) Watson of Chico, Wise County, Texas, was a sister to Columbus Andrew Watson who was the father of Hazel A. (Watson) who married Samuel A. C. Shanafelt of Bryson. Joseph Huddleston Watson was studying to become a Methodist preacher when the Civil War broke out and he joined the Confederacy. Often when the men were camped near Shelbyville, the girls would ride their horses out to the camp and there would be dancing into the wee hours of the morning. Emily Womack often rode her horse to the camps and really enjoyed these outings. Following the Civil War, Joseph married Emily M. Womack of Flat Creek, Tennessee, on October 25, 1866. Joseph farmed and, at times, worked for his father-in-law who was a millwright and owned a water mill. While living in Flat Creek, Joseph and Emily had two children, Columbus Andrew and Clora Anne. Their third child, Della Linla was born in Talahoma, Tennessee. In 1879, Joseph Huddleston Watson moved his family from Flat Creek, Tennessee, to Little Rock and then to Hope, Arkansas where they both had relatives. In 1884, they moved to Wise County, Texas. Joseph was a farmer, but was skilled in the art of carpentry, which he plied to great advantage in pioneer Chico. Arriving in Wise County, Joseph settled in the community of Prairie Point, about five miles NE of the newly organized town of Chico, where he later moved. Joseph was a good provider. They always had meat and ground flour for bread for their meals, but when he found out that the neighbor children had cold cornbread and molasses for school lunches, that was what he ordered his children to carry in their lunches, even though he knew that his daughter, Clora, disliked that sandwich. He did not want his children to appear more affluent than the neighbors. In the latter part of the 1880s, Joseph Watson was elected Public Weigher for Chico. He remained the cotton weigher for many years, for Wise County was one of the great cotton producing areas of that day. He purchased two acres of land in the southwest part of Chico where he built his home by adding to a small two room house which was already on the land. Being of a strongly religious Methodist family, he was educated for the Methodist Ministry, but coming under the influence of the Disciples movement in the 1850s, he espoused that cause and became an enthusiastic supporter of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church. Soon after coming to Chico, Mr. Watson and his wife, Emily, finding a number of Disciples among the settlers called a meeting at their home to organize a church. Meetings were held in the various homes until about 1893 when a church was built. Mr. Watson, his son and a Mr. Bascom Johnson, did practically all the work on the building which still stands and is used by the congregation today. Emily (Womack) Watson was tall, very slender and a friendly, loving woman, and what some might call "a kid spoiler". She preferred to be called "Ma" by her grandchildren and loved for the grandchildren to visit and often allowed them to bring a friend with them. At those times, she would bake something that she knew the child especially liked, often letting the child help her with the cooking. It was at such times that you might see her smiling as she sat by the window tatting and watching the grandchildren chasing a bird with the salt shaker in hand, believing that if they could shake a bit of salt on the bird's tail, they would be able to catch the bird. Emily liked to take late evening walks, and welcomed company and conversation with her walks. She was an intelligent woman with strong opinions and tended to say what she thought, often embarrassing her daughter, Clora, by her phrasing of sentences, for instance, "Your children would eat cow chips if you poured that sweet sauce on it." And if things didn't go right, she might say, "Shit." She made beautiful doll clothes for the dolls and sunbonnets for the girls. Emily, herself, wore beautiful hats. After the children were married and moved out of the area, Joseph and Emily often rode a train to visit their daughters' homes to see the grandchildren. Joseph was working in Wilkins Oklahoma, where he and Emily had recently moved, when he suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage on August 8, 1911, at the age of 69. He was returned to Chico for burial. After his death, Emily rented her home to her son, Columbus, keeping one room for herself. The rent from the home plus her Veteran's pension left her financially independent, and allowed her to continue making trips by train to visit her daughters, Clora and Della, whenever she liked. Emily was visiting her daughter, Clora Anne, in Tulia, Texas, when she died on September 2, 1918, just short of her seventy-third birthday. She is buried at Chico, next to Joseph. 1. Around 1802, Thomas went to Tennessee where he married Mary McFalls and became acquainted with the young Cambern brothers, James B. Cambern and Henry H. Cambern who had left their home in Lebanon, Kentucky sometime before 1838. They were sons of Ignatius and Sarah (Bell) Camborn. James Cambern traveled down through Tennessee, spent time with the Bell family and made plans to travel with them on their trip to Texas. In December 1837, James Cambern, Thomas & Mary Bell and all but two of their children started to Texas on the steamer "Blackhawk". On December 27th the steamer exploded and the families lost all of their possessions including the life of a small daughter, probably the daughter of Virginia (Bell) Mathews. Margery (Bell) & James Cambern were married in Shelby County, Texas in 1844. Around 1855, the Cambern family moved to Jack County settling near the Keechi community. Mary (Bell) and Daniel Kutch also settled at Keechi. Virginia (Bell) and Jacob Mathews settled nearer to the Fort Worth area. On 12 Jan 1858, Margery wrote a letter to her brothr's family back in Tyler describing their surroundings as very promising, that they had already harested a crop of wheat, and that "we have good land, good range, timber enough and good water." She goes on to say that she had seen only three white men since last August, and finally, to dircet their letters to her family to Weatherford. Though the letter had been written in January, there had been no chance to mail it. (This letter was found in their home by relatives, after most of her family had been murdered by white men and Indians on 18 Apr 1858.) BELL, Mage Thomas b. 1776 d. 1862 m. Mary McFalls 1. They located this 1,280 acres in Montgomery County. Later, because of conflict of title relocated in 1845 to Robertson County and later Tarrant County grew out of Robertson Co. They were the second settlers in the Bear Creek community where Bear Creek and Clear Fork of Trinity come together. 1) Mary Jane Mathews b. 05 Feb 1834 2) Sarah Elizabeth Mathews, m. No doudt he had a land grant on this place as he had always done previously, but records are not available. The Lovings took over the place later. Clear titles were a problem, and all the previous places wound up haveing previous claim that the Land Office failed to note before issuing another grant on the same land. He moved to Texas with his family when he was eight years old. Henry married Mary in Dallas County, Texas. Henry, as did his younger brother Tom, entered the Civil War army of the South at Fort Worth, Texas, under the immediate command of General R. M. Gano, served throughout the four years of strife in all the hard-fought battles, resisting Sherman on his march to the sea. A professed disciple of Thomas Jefferson, he took part in all democratic work. Came to Jack County, Texas in 1878. Bryson with his noble wife, was a staunch member of the Church of Christ, lived a devout Christian life. While not pretentious in manner he had the bearing of a man of solid worth of character; his influence was felt wherever he appeared both in church and in the private walks of life. Ever charitable, his sage advise helped many a forlorn brother over the rough places and assisted him in paving the road to success. Daughters Ida Kate and Sally Bess were married in a double wedding. Justly termed the father of this town, he passed away in 1909 of kidney trouble at the age of 70 years. The Bryson family was a progressive and well respected set of people. 243 BRYSON, Henry Elam "Eli" m. 23 Jan 1867 b. 01 Sep 1839 40y d. 25 Oct 1909* Prec.5 m. They both attended Center College of Danville, Kentucky and were well educated. They were sons of Ignatius and Sarah (Bell) Camborn. Because of religious differences the two brothers changed the spelling of their name to Cambern and left home. Henry settled on the west coast around the Tacoma area. Mage Thomas Bell (relative of their mother) left his home in Baltimore, Maryland around 1795. Thomas went to Tennessee where he married Mary McFalls around 1802. James Cambern traveled down through Tennessee, spent time with the Bell family and made plans to travel with theim on their trip to Texas. In December 1837, James Cambern, Thomas & Mary Bell and all but three of their children started to Texas on the steamer "Blackhawk". On December 27th the steamer exploded and the families lost all of their possessions including the life of a small daughter, probably the daughter of Virginia (Bell) Mathews. Margery Bell and James Cambern were married in Shelby County, Texas in 1844. After spending several years in Smith County, Texas, in 1855, James and his family moved to Jack County settling near the Keechi community. Margery's sister Mary and her husband Daniel Kutch also settled at Keechi. Their sister Virginia and her husband Jacob Mathews settled nearer to the Fort Worth area. (See Bell, Mage Thomas & Kutch, Daniel) In 1857 James and Margery Cambern filed on two surveys about 15 miles Northwest of Jacksboro. (This letter was found in their home by relatives, after most of her family had been murdered by white men and Indians on 18 Apr 1858.) On 18 Apr 1858, a band of Indians and several white men, later identified as W. E. Willis, Isham Tipton, W. C. Jones and W. B. Morrison, went to the home of James Cambern to commit and did commit robbery and murder. James and his two oldest boys, 12 year old Luther and William James, about 11 years, had been working in the field and were preparing to unhitch the team before going into their home for dinner. Some Indians appeared in the field but since Indians were still on the reservation, they supposed they were friendly. Two, however, dismounted, jumped over the fence and one killed James Cambern with an arrow that entered his left side and exited his right side. The other Indian shot and killed the oldest boy, Luther and then shot William James, who was nearer the fence and managed to get over the fence before he died. While this was going on, the white men went to the house, took Margery (Bell) Cambern and the younger Cambern children out into the yard, guarding them while other robbed the house. There was a red-headed white man who dictated the affair, and whom little Mary Cambern watched closely. This red-headed murderer sent six or seven Indians over to the home of Tom Mason, about a mile away, to kill and rob them. The Mason family were eating dinner. Just what commenced no one knows, as the oldest child, Alexander (Tobe) was not quite three years old. Milton, the youngest, was ten months of age. Mason and his wife were killed a short distance from the house. The little boys were not harmed. After the bunch at the Cambern home had robbed the house and cut open the feather beds, they took Margery and the four little children, Thomas, Mary, Dewitt and the infant James, Jr. upon a high hill out of sight of the home. The Indians from Mason's joined them there on that mountain. They had stolen some horses down on Bean's creek the night before. (These white men were noted horse thieves.) They roped a mule and tied it to a tree and were preparing to tie the older boy, 9 year old Thomas on the mule when Mrs. Cambern and the baby James, Jr. began crying and screaming. The Indians ran a spear down the baby's throat, spearing him four times, killing him. They shot Mrs. Cambern three or four times, killing her. Then they tied little 9 year old Thomas on the mule and turned the mule loose. They left little seven year old Mary and five year old Dewitt alone by their dead mother and brother. (Cambern sometimes spelled Cameron - or pronounced as such. The Cameron Creek was named for the Cambern family.) A full account of these murders can be found at the beginning of this manuscript. He was the Grandson of Elisha (b. 22 Sep 1772 Md.) and Rebecca (Moore) (b. 24 May 1776) Chambers in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1848, the year Jasper Newton was born, Elisha, Jr. was attracted by the Louisville, Kentucky land promoters known as "The Peters Colony" and moved his family to the Weston area of Collin County, Texas. It is told that Jasper Newton Chambers was in the Civil War at the age of 16 years. He married Sarah Hampton, born Missouri, on 16 May 1867. Feeling the need for more land to accommodate his growing family, they came to Jack County in the late 1870s and bought a nice tract of land east and south of the present town of Bryson. Jasper Chambers was a progressive farmer and stockman. He raised pure bred cattle and as good mules and horses as were ever raised in this country. The Chambers were fine people and good neighbors. They were a credit to any community, very reliable and law abiding citizens. 244 CHAMBERS, Jasper Newton b. 23 Mar 1848 32y d. 12 May 1921* Prec.5 m. Cyrus Putnam Clayton, II first came to Bryson to look at the possibility of extending the railroad into western Texas. He had owned a railroad between Fort Payne, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee before the Civil War. He was a Methodist minister who worked hard to provide well for his family but would not take pay for his ministry. When the Civil war broke out, he moved with his family, except for his oldest son, to Bloomington, Illinois where he worked in the Pullman factory. It was there that Cyrus became acquainted with Mr. Pullman, inventor of the pullman car and also with his future son-in-law, Benjamin Scott, owner of the first train in Chicago. Children born in Dade County, Georgia. Came to Bryson from Fort Payne, De Kalb County, Alabama on 17 Mar 1881, settling near "Mt. Hecla" later known as Bryson. 1) Cyrus Putnam Clayton, II b. 08 Dec 1820 d. 28 Sep 1902* m. The Clayton party came by train to Weatherford, Texas and then by covered wagon to Bryson. They arrived 17 Mar 1881. In the party from Alabama were the families of R. Reno and Clementine (Sampley) Clayton and six children, Bob and Belinda (Sampley) Bryant and four children; and Jim and Rutha (Sampley) McCloud and nine children. Arriving in Bryson, they went to the home of Bud Sampley, brother to the three sisters. Cyrus, wife Nancy and their son Cyrus III moved to Bryson in 1890. They were Staunch members of the Methodist Church. 1. Cyrus Putnam Clayton, III (Never married) b. 1843 d. 1923* 2. Melvina Clayton, m. Benjamin Scott of Illinois b. 13 Sep 1847 d. 12 Jul 1937 3. He enlisted at the age of 16 years in the 40th Tennessee Infantry of the Confederate Army on 3 Nov 1861 at Memphis, Tenn. He was captured 8 Apr 1862 by the Union Army and held prisoner at Camp Butler, Springfield, Ill. While a prisoner, his grandmother, Ann, in her 62nd year, rode horseback, sidesaddle, from Ft. Payne, Ala. through enemy lines to visit her grandson. She was stopped almost daily, accused of being a spy. On 19 Jul 1862 Mack escaped but later joined the Union Army Co. D, 81st Regiment of Ohio Infantry Volunteer on 1 Sep 1862. He thought by joining the Union Army that he would not be guarded so closely and hoped to escape to go home. He was discharged 29 May 1865. The day after graduation, at 7:00 a.m., Joe Lake drove Mr. Joe and Mrs. Hazel over to the Methodist Parsonage and they were married. They had nine good years before his death. Hazel was my Grandmother and we loved to visit "Bama" and Mr. Joe - as he was always affectionately called by the step-grandchildren. He was a good, quite man who was quick to reward you with a smile. He and my Grandmother went to Europe and shared many opportunities traveling together. Mr. Joe had two good women in his life and thought the most important thing a man could have was a good wife. He always looked forward to living but after his 90th birthday his health started failing and he was ready to go on and thankful for the time and people that had been in his life. He loved his children and wanted a good life for them and their children and strongly felt that the church should be a part of their lives. He felt that it was more than just believing, but that it took support and loyalty to God and to whatever one pursued. 1. Carlos Edward Clayton b. 15 Nov 1906 d. 25 Aug 1960 m. Alfred Chandler, the administrator of his estate, received a certificate from Thomas William Ward, and Dillingham's heirs patented 320 acres in Collin County (Fannin Third Class No. 3843). DILLINGHAM Prairie derived its name from a gentleman by the name of Dillingham; a man of considerable means, owned slaves and much other property. Mr. Dillingham settled there in 1847, made nice improvements, putting a good- sized field in cultivation, became dissatisfied, abandoned the place and moved away prior to the Civil War. In 1881 W. M. Glidewell bought this land that was abandoned. This was possibly Baker F. Dillingham or Ephraium Dillingham, both documented as being in Jack County when first organized. 211 DUNN, James B. b. 04 Jan 1846 35y d. 02 Jul 1884* Prec.5 m. Mary E.
