As a young man, Elisha left North Carolina without letting his family know he was leaving. His wife, Mary Josephine Leatherwood was the daughter of John and Martha (Pierson) Leatherwood from Alabama. December 1904, they sold their farm to their oldest son, John and in 1905 moved to west Texas to a farm in Borden County. After the death of Josephine in 1925, Sim, the youngest son and his family left Jack County to live with his father and in 1929, Elisha moved back to Jack County to live with John and his family. It was during this time that Elisha went by train to North Carolina to see relatives whom he had not seen since a young man. He returned to his home in Borden County, Texas where he died and was buried beside his wife. John Henry Marley is buried in the Mountain Home Cemetery, Jack County, Texas. 234 MARLEY, Elisha Smith b. 23 May 1849 31y d. 04 Jan 1941 Prec.5 m. As a child he moved with his parents to DeKalb County, Alabama. At 16 years of age enlisted as a Confederate soldier and served 3 years in General Joe Wheeler's Cavalry, 3rd Division, Company I, Alabama Regiment. He married Rutha Elizabeth Sampley in Fort Payne, Alabama. Jim, Rutha, and their first nine children came to Jack County in March 1881. They were part of the Bryson party who traveled from Fort Payne, Alabama, arriving by rail in Weatherford, Texas and made a five day journey by covered wagon to Bryson. Soon after moving to Bryson, James "Jim" founded the Bryson Methodist Church. The first service was held in the shade of a cottonwood tree at Cottonwood Springs, three miles east of Bryson. McCloud was a farmer and was licensed to preach in October 1881. He was the Methodist minister for 53 years and preached throughout the North Texas area. Parson McCloud helped organize other churches. Parson McCloud never stuttered while preaching a sermon although he stuttered very bad in a normal conversation. His daughter "Sallie" had the destinction of being postmistress for thirty-four and 1/2 years - longer than any other person since the post office was established. His sons, Ben and Tom both went to college and graduated with honors in medicine and surgery. They both practiced in Bryson for a short time and after moving from Bryson followed the medical profession until their death. Dr. Ben L. McCloud had a son that followed in his fathers footsteps. Tom McCloud was named after his father's good friend Thomas Benton Riddel. As a gift to his namesake, Benton gave him a colt. When the two sons returned to Bryson they used the off spring of this colt to pull the buggy that they used to make calls. During the drought years of the middle 1880's, the Parson moved his family to Roxton, Lamar County, Texas, to be near an uncle. He returned to Bryson in 1891. Four years later, William Clayborn moved his family to the community of Headrick near Altus, Greer County, Oklahoma. At the time, the area was in Indian Territory. For seven years, William Clayborn farmed a homestead claim which they had bought from a settler. Prior to completing their home, the family lived in a dug-out where their son Eugene was born. In December 1907, William Clayborn and family returned to Bryson. McCLOUD, James Madison, Rev., Methodist b. 03 Apr 1845 d. 18 Apr 1934* m. He had a daughter Betty Milligan who was very pretty but some of the boys thought she was stuck up. One of the local boys left town for awhile and later came back to Bryson and roomed at the hotel. He bagan to itch and when he examinied his clothes found that he had "gray backs" or lice - or as the soldiers called them "cooties". Not being especially fond of Miss Betty he proceeded to pick off a few of them and waited his chance and dropped them down the back of her collar. Rody joined the Confederate Army but did not serve long as he was discharged to buy horses for the army. He was quite proficient in riding, breeding, raising and trading horses. He and Jane owned several farms run by slaves. Because of the slaves, he never had to work. Jane was from a well educated family - women as well as the men. She was close to her father, Arthur Dillingham, where she learned to conduct business and manage the Moore family affairs. Rody sold some of his farms and had a trunk that was half full of Confederate money when he decided to move to Texas. During this move to Texas, his wife Jane Christine (Dillingham) Moore rode horseback with the oldest baby (Mary Hayden) in her arms. For a while, Rody and Jane ran a boarding house in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas. This was where Lillian was born, being raised by a Black Mammy and attended boarding school at Bonham. While at Ladonia, Rody had his wife Jane ride a race horse out to the race track while he rode a slower one. Rody bet everything he had, (farm, house and all) on the horse Jane rode. Needless to say, he won. Rody and his family moved to Bonham, Texas before moving to Bryson. From a man by the name of Lockett, Rody bought a good farm around the year 1886, in Young County, Texas. It had a large house and over 100 acres of cultivation and pasture on it. The place Moore bought had been a horse ranch and he raised a number of thoroughbred race horses. They couldn't bring the negroes with them and the Black Mammy cried and prayed to go with them but no negroes were allowed. The Moore tract of land was later owned by John Blount. Ed SHANAFELT (see Shanafelt) Edd Shanafelt was about twenty when he and his mother Catherine (Rusie) Shanafelt settled back in Bryson, Texas. One evening Edd went to a square dance that was held in the Rock Schoolhouse. It was at this dance that he first saw his future wife, Lillian Moore. Lillian was a sweet sixteen year old square dancer. Edd was trying to figure out how to impress her when a polecat got in the stove so he got a stick and ran it out. Sometime after the dance, Jess Chambers asked Edd to go with him to see his girl. The girl was Lillian Moore and from that day on she was Edd's girl. Lillian was very petite, tiny hands and feet but high-spirited with a quick tongue and temper. She loved to dance; however, when she found the Lord at a revival she never danced another step. After a four year courtship, on 24 November, 1892, twenty-five year old Edd Shanafelt and twenty year old Lillian Moore were married. For a while Edd freighted from Fort Worth while the family lived in Matador in a dugout while he freighted for the Matador Ranch. They lived in Bryson for seventeen years and had five sons Ralph, Cecil, White and Rody; Clyde died at birth. All of Edd and Lillian's children were born in Bryson, Texas. Edd suffered from asthma and this caused them to find a better climate. 1909 they put their belongings in two wagons and went west until they reached California Creek in Jones County, Texas. It appears that his asthma has been passed on generation to generation. He was so much better after the move that in 1912 they purchased 175 acres near Sunnyside Community. This farm is where he and Lillian spent the rest of their lives. 336 MOORE, Alexander b. 1814 66y Virginia 1) Hugh Moore b. 1862 18y Texas 2) Benjamin Moore b. 1866 14y 212 MORRISON, Oliver b. 1835 45y Prec.5 m. In 1852 Thomas moved his family to Texas, settling near Dennison and then prior to the Civil War, to a farm near Azle, Texas. Their children were Andrew B. (married and moved to Matador; they had 3 children to die in Jack County, buried at Winn Hill), Niecey (m. Everett Johnson), Sarah (m. Tucker Cornelius and moved to Potter County where their child was the first white child born in Potter County), Paulina (m. David Reynolds) and Gravner. Gravner S. served in the Texas Rangers stationed in Veal Station. Their duties were to protect the settlers from Indians that came into North Texas. The Thomas Newman family moved to Jack County around 1872-1873, settling on a farm 8 or 10 miles northwest of Jacksboro known as Robert's Prairie. In 1886, the severe drought caused G. S. to load his possessions in a wagon, lead his few livestock and move across the corner of Indian Nation (Oklahoma). They settled on the Boston Mountains near Fayetteville, Arkansas. In Arkansas they suffered from "chills" and "fevers" so in 1888 they moved back to the Newman farm in Jack County. 195 NEWMAN, Gravner Stewart m. 01 Aug 1867 b. 17 May 1848 32y d. 29 Jan 1929= m. Soon after her death, Samuel C., with all the children except his son Samuel Elliott Nichols, moved to the Long Hollow Community, Jack County. In 1891 Alabama, Samuel Elliott Nichols married his first wife who died there around 1897. Soon after her death, Samuel Elliott and his young son Charlie moved to Jack County to be near his family. After his marriage to Tishie, Samuel purchased a barber shop on the north side of Dempsey Street and was the town's barber until 1916, when he purchased a grocery business. This store was on the south side of Dempsey next to Dr. Hughes' drug store and office. A few years later he purchased a general store where he remained until he retired in 1932. He was elected Constable of Precinct 8 in Jack County on 5 Nov 1918. Tishie would manage the store when he would have to be away. The Nichols were members of the Methodist Church. He was the son of Alexander and Emily Caroline (Dickerson) Padgett who came, with their children, to Young County, Texas in 1883. As young boys, Lewis A. Riddel and Willie Padgett worked on a thrasher for Willie's Uncle Isaac B. Padgett. Willie later went to medical school and operated on Lewis for appendicitis, visiting him daily while he recuperated at his daughter's home. On one of these visits Willie told the story about when he and Frank Still were boys. He said that he and Frank were plowing with double shovels in a corn patch and it got really hot during the day. After working one Saturday they got on their horses, heading toward Bryson when they saw some advertising for Dr. Legeers "gawl" cure. Still told Padgett that he thought he would get some of it where in Padgett told him he bet it really would get the job done. At work on the following Monday morning they started plowing again and after walking behind the plow most of the morning Still began to complain of the "gawlding" hurting him. Dr. Padgett asked him why he did not try the medicine. He said that they plowed along to the other side of the field and Frank let his pants down and put a lot of the "cure on his gawlded places between his hips." Frank began to jump and dance around and said the medicine was setting him on fire. Padgett went on to tell that Still then came completely out of his pants and, in an attempt to get the "cure" off of him so that the burning would stop, got down and drug his hips in the wet, cool dirt the plows had turned up. One can guess what Dr. Padgett was doing all the while and was still doing years later when relating this story. Dr. William O. Padgett established his medical practice in Graham in 1915. Isaac B.
