Infantry, Confederate 1890 (then joined) Co.D, 81st Reg. Ohio, Union Goodson "Mack" Clayton, son of Cyrus & Nancy Clayton, remained in Alabama with his grandmother Ann Clayton Thompson. He enlisted at the age of 16 years in the Conf. Tenn. Inf. on 3 Nov 1861 at Memphis, Tenn. He was captured 8 Apr 1862 by the Union Army and held prisoner at Camp Butler, Springfield, Ill. While a prisoner, his grandmother, Ann, in her 62nd year, rode horseback, sidesaddle, from Ft. Payne, Ala. through enemy lines to visit her grandson. She was stopped almost daily, accused of being a spy. On 19 Jul 1862 Mack escaped but later joined the Union Ohio Infantry on 1 Sep 1862.
