Other information; he had lived in Loving, ! Young Co., TX for one year, was a farmer, assessed value of his property $800.00 and in poor health, at the time of application. Statement from the "War Department, The ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, WASHINGTON; May 18, 1917: Respectfully returned to Commissioner of Pensions, State of Texas, Austin, with the information that: Samuel Newman [Pvt.] Company "D" 9th Battl'n., MO. S.S. C.S.A. (No rolls on file) appears on a register of C.S.A. G.H., Shreveport, LA as admitted April 18, 1865. Complaint, dysentery returned to duty April 20, 1865 and shown on a roll of prisoners of war of "Co., D", Pindalls (9th) Battl'n S.S. Lewis' Brig. C.S.A. as paroled at Shreveport, LA. June 7 1865. +++ end of document:" The application for pension continues with information, states that "First enlisted in Green's State Troops, wounded and captured August 1862, additional information about name of Unit he was with includes; Co., D Ninth [9th] Missouri Sharp Shooters; Parsons Bri! gade, Pendal's Battalion". Application Witnessed by: W.C. Groner, and J.L. McCord, signed 10 May 1917. Application for MORTUARY WARRANT; signed by "Mary Newman" his wife, states that he died at his home on the 5th day of February 1925, in the town of Newcastle, Young Co., TX. Certificate of Undertaker signed by; "W.H. Dover" and Attending Physician Certificate signed by; " C.J. Ponis [spelling?] " giving cause of death to be "Senility". Both Undertaker and Physician were in Newcastle, Young Co., TX. Young Co., TX, Death Certificate lists unknown for name of parents of Samuel Newman Sr.; date of death on the certificate does not correspond with date (of 1926) recorded on headstone in Winn Hill Cemetery where he is buried, headstone may have been added some time after his death. Date of death certificate also does not correspond with the date on CSA Pension Application for Mortuary Warrant signed by Notary Public "H.C. Williams" and the Undertak! er "W.H Dover". Date of death listed on Young County, TX, Death Certificate is shown to be 4 February 1925. Cause of death listed as "Senility". ******************** Confederate Soldier Pension, Widow's Claim # 40710, filed 16 April 1925, by Mary Newman, widow of Sam Newman, who died in Young Co., TX on 5 February 1925, and had been drawing benefits under his own Claim # 34180 which Samuel Newman had filed prior to his death. Mary Newman states that she was born in the state of Texas, and was married to Sam Newman about 1875 in Navarro Co., TX, she states her age is 70 years old, born in Texas, and was moving from Young Co., TX and her new address was R.F.D. #31, Jacksboro, TX. This is sworn to and signed by; H C/A McClure, County Judge, of Jack Co., TX. Affidavit of Witnesses: signed by Wm. Clay and L.T. Richardson. CERTIFICATE OF STATE AND COUNTY ASSESSOR: States that she had personal and real property and a homeste! ad; to! tal value $460. Records show Mary Newman was hospitalized 19 May 1930, and released on 25 September 1930, record also contain several letters written by "Mrs John Wilton", [Box 72, Jermyn, TX] who lists herself as daughter of Mary Newman.
