McConnell’s “Five Years a Cavalryman.” It will be a handsome book of about 300 pages, printed on tinted paper and bound in full cloth. T.J. Dunlap of Salt Creek James W. Knox T.L. Durham moved his office down to the first floor in the court house, opposite the treasurer’s office. H.M. Hoskins and S.F. Parrott, Jack County deputy sheriffs, went over to the Indian Territory, and returned last Thursday with R.W. Ratcliff who was wanted at Graham charged with illegal handling of mortgaged property. They brought back M. McMillan who is charge with killing Alexander in Jacksboro about 15 years ago [1874]. McMillan has applied for a habeas corpus trial and the judge will come up before Judge Patterson as soon as he can come up from Weatherford where he is now holding court. Sikes and daughter of Christian visited Dr. and Mrs. J.W. McComb Frank Specht returned from Johnson county. T.L. Noyes and J.H. Rahde of Houston, representing the Diebold Safe and Lock Co. G.M. Jinkins of Newbrook. The D.P. & S.E. R.R. graders were within two miles of Boonville. Wiley Blair of Weatherford T.A. McDonald of Fort Worth. C.E. Gwyn of North Creek came from Kansas and purchased land in Jack County. A.M. Bailey of Bryson visited Decatur. C.W. Cooper returned from New Mexico R.J. Jordan, who lives two miles southwest of town. Rev. David Kingery and family arrived from Arlingon, Kansas. Mr. Kingery has assumed the pastorate of the Presbyterian church of Jacksboro. J.[John] C.[Carpenter] Fisher of Weatherford, printer took a position in the Gazette, as foreman of the book department. May Term of Commissioner’s Court Present: Hon. H.P. Jones, County Judge; H.H. Nelson, Commissioner Pct. 1, G.B. Shipman, Commissioner Pct. 2, James T. Jones, Commission Pct. 3, G.R. Christian, Commissioner Pct. 4; G.W. Moore, Sheriff, D.B. Gilliland, Clerk. The court ordered an election in school district No. 16 and Oak Glen school district No. 33 to determine whether or not hogs, sheep and goats shall run at large. J.A. Hester appointed justice of the peace, Pct. 6, vice T.J. Tarrance resigned. The court contracted yesterday with the Diebold Safe and Lock company to put in 3 new cells in the jail and to move the old cells down to the first floor and make other repairs, open windows, etc. to be completed by the 31st of August. Job will cost $4943.00. For the Spring Palace H.H. McConnell shipped a block of blue limestone from his quarry and a block of gray or clouded limestone for M.V. Phipps taken from a great mass of stone of similar quality below town, both of these stones take a high polish. The blocks of stone go to the Spring Palace at Fort Worth. Vineyard School Vineyard public school term closed on the first of May with an examination conducted by Mrs. Grisham and Miss Kate Blakey assisted by others. Bean Prairie School Miss Loretta Asten’s school at Bean Prairie closed on the 8th inst. Salt Creek School Miss Ida Garvin’s school at Salt Creek closed the 27th ult., with an examination in the morning. Miss Garvin is one of the J.C.E.I.[transcriber’s note: Jack County Educational Institute] pupils. Miss Garvin taught four months at Salt Creek and her patrons were all pleased with her work.
