May, sheriff of Grayson County, which occurred at Howe last Sunday morning, by two desperadoes, Ben and John Isom. They arrived about a week before the tragedy from Kentucky and had been hanging around Howe and on Sunday began drinking and undertook to run the town, and in the absence of the marshall Sheriff May was sent for and was shot while attempted to arrest the Isoms. When Ben Isom was taken in Sherman, cries of “hang him” “burn him” went up from the multitude which had assembled at the depot. Guarded by a detachment of Grayson Rifles and officers he was taken to jail where the other parties had been lodged several hours before. Personal [those visiting Jacksboro during the past week] J.M. Mrs. Bailey and her sons, Henry and James and Mrs. Slaughter visited relatives in Decatur. John Hensley and daughter, Miss Hattie, Mrs. Lizzie F. Somervell, Miss Winnie McClure and Harmon Cline visited the Spring Palace in Fort Worth. James Hart, manager of the Jacksboro Mills, is off to Bryson and Graham in the interest of the mills. W.B. Stramer bought a McCormick self-binder from John Hensley & Son. T.F. Warden drilled a well in Pleasant Grove for J.A. McCune. M.W. Cooper drilled a well for G.W. Moore and has reached a depth of 162 feet, having passed two buds of limestone and is now in the third straits which is nearly white. J.C. Loving and Mr. Hunt of Lost Valley each purchased a mower and rake from Wall & Dunn. Bryson Rev. Whitsonberg of the Methodist Episcopal church preached at Cottonwood. Miss Myrtle Kinzie returned from Thorp Springs. Miss Maggie Lowe attended Bryson Academy left for her home in East Texas Miss Nellie Rucks and Ben Lowe accompanied Miss Maggie Lowe. Mr. James of East Texas visited Mr. And Mrs. Coston. Mr. And Mrs. J.T. Jones entertained relatives from Missouri. Miss Betty Milliken opened a milliner store next door to the post office. Mr. Crumpton has the lumber for a new house. He will move his gin to town. Messrs. Stark and Hughes of Jacksboro are here surveying land.
