All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************************* The Jacksboro Gazette Thursday, July 10, 1890 The board of directors of the A. and M. college has tendered the presidency of that institution to Governor Ross, and the citizens of Bryan, at the call of the mayor met and passed resolutions endorsing the action of the board and expressing a desire that he would accept a position. Reeser’s gin house is about all on the ground and the machinery will be brought up as soon as the house is ready. Last week a man stole a horse from a Mr. Courtney in Wise county, and a deputy sheriff came through this place in pursuit. He was joined here by Deputy Sheriff Hoskins and pursued to Young county. The pressed the thief so close that he left the horse, saddle, his coat and tobacco. He then stole a $125 mare from Gus Wayne in Young County and went on to Throckmorton. The Wise county deputy returned and deputy from Young County accompanied Mr. Hoskins and then they followed him to Throckmorton. By that time their horses were tired and the sheriff of Throckmorton county refused to lend any assistance and so they were compelled to give up the chase. King, et al, action on supreme court No. 856 – The State of Texas vs. Newton Hill, judgement set aside. This morning the jury in the Bill Pitts wire case rendered the verdict of guilty and assessed his punishment at three years and six months in the penitentiary.
