He was born in Saxony, 14 September 1828, came to America in 1845, and soon after joined the army under General Scott, and served throughout the Mexican War, during which he was wounded by a shell. He married in August 1851, and remained in the 5 U.S. Infantry until 1856, when he was transferred to General HarneyÕs regiment, the famous 2d Dragoons. He remained in this regiment until 1865, when he was appointed Ordinance Sergeant U.S.A. and served at various forts on the Atlantic coast and in the west, until 1874, when he became a civilian, having completed about 28 years of active and continuous service.
