Joseph married Elizabeth Ann Brisco on December 14, 1869 in Jack County. Joseph and his family were no strangers to the dangers of living on the frontier. Betweem the two, of their brothers, sisters, and parents, there were eight (8) killed, five (5) were wounded, one tortured, and five (5) taken captive. They knew the rigors and horrors of living on the rugged frontier, but they stayed anyway, and were counted among the settlers of Jack County, TX. Joe also served as a Private in the Texas State Troops in Robert's Company in the Confederate service during the War for Southern Independence at age 19. Just three years earlier, he survived an Indian attack on his family because he was out looking for some strayed oxen. He was abt 16 at the time.
