On June 27, their first child, Annie Louise was born next door at the home of her grandmother, Fannie Louisa Culpepper Wilkerson. The house sits on the corner of Ed Linn and Blackjack Street. The Annie name came from her other grand- mother, Annie Inez Laughter Milby. The family gave Louise the nickname of “Dootsie” which was used by all her nephews, nieces and friends. Within a couple of years, Louise had a brother Henry Franklin, nick- named “Bubba” and a sister Georgie Erle. Sadly at the age of three, after playing outside in the water, Louise became sick with polio in the year 1914. When she went to school “Bubba” pulled her in a little red wagon. The girls at school would fight over who was to pull her. Later brother Robert Woodrow was born, then the youngest Michael Hunt, whom they called “Junior.” Louise was then 12 years old. Mother Sophie always insisted the kids play in her yard, because she stayed home, didn’t work or play cards. Neighborhood kids were always welcome. Games they played were “Fox in the War,” “Hide And Seek,” “Tag” and “playing jacks” on the porch. Crawfishing in the big ditch in front of the house was fun. Louise traveled to Houston for operations on her legs when her cousin Irene Howell Puckett, an Eastern Star member, enlisted help from the Schreiners. Braces were then put on her legs and she was able to use crutches. She graduated from Edna High School in 1928. Maizie Curlee Roberts picked Louise up in her car and enabled her to go everywhere. When she went to work at the Jackson County Courthouse, Mr. Knopp was her boss for a short time. She next worked for Charlie Mitchell in the tax office. Louise and boss Claudius Branch, tax collector, were very active in the March of Dimes. When Claudius resigned she became tax collector. During World War II Louise took care of her mother while Woodrow and Mike were in the service. She loved to attend dances and baseball games with a group of young people. Louise would loan anything to anybody in a time of need, but she wanted to be totally independent. Cats were her specialty, always having 16 to 20 outside cats. She leaves behind “Whiskers” her 14-year-old gray house cat. He will travel to Houston to live with Mike and Carolyn Milby. These past years, homebound, her interaction in the lives of family and friends cannot be replaced. She was the grandmother everyone wished they could have to family and friends. Louise was a member of the Morales Baptist Church. She died on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at 7:15 p.m. At DeTar Hospital in Victoria. Survivors: brothers, Woodrow Milby and Mike Milby, both of Edna. Preceded in death by sister Georgie Lowery and brother Henry “Bubba” Milby. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church of Edna with the Rev. Sue Huntsman, Chaplin David Hagan and Jo Kathryn Quinn officiating. Carolyn Milby and Jo Kathryn Quinn sang solos and duets with Robert Wyatt playing the organ. Pallbearers: John Biddy, Jim Milby, Jerry Nedbalec, Larry Evans, Troy Lynn Quinn, Kerry Quinn, Robin Quinn and Eric Quinn. Burial took place at the Culpepper-Wilkerson Family Cemetery near her home in Morales.
