Whittington Funeral services for Bobby Wade Whittington, 68, of Portland were held Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Portland with Dr. Charles Higgs officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m. at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna under the direction of Limbaugh Funeral Home of Portland. Mr. Whittington died Nov. 26. Born Sept. 25, 1933, in Morales to the late Boon and Lillie Gates Whittington, he served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. He was a deputy sheriff in Travis and Jackson counties. He was an inspector with the Railroad Commission before forming his own oil and gas company, Lamb Oil and Gas in 1968. He retired as an independent oil and gas producer in 1989. He served as a Portland City Council member from October 1973 to January 1980. He was mayor of Portland from January 1980 to April 1990. Survivors include his wife, Lois Whittington of Edna whom he married Jan. 28, 1961; a daughter, Karen (Kirk) Osborne, Houston; son, Winston (Erin) Whittington, Alexandria, Va.; sisters, Dell Sowell, Merle Whittington and Eyvonne Goad, all of Edna, and two granddaughters, Kirsten and Mary Klaire Osborne. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Boon Whittington. Memorials may be made to Bell/Whittington Public Library, 2400 Memorial Parkway, Portland, Texas 78374.
