W. H. HOLMES DIES OF GUNSHOT WOUNDS.

Murder Charge Is Filed Against J. T. Beaty.

Formal charges of murder were filed yesterday against former state senator, John 
T. Beaty, who shot and fatally wouned W. H. Homes Jan. 1. W. H. Holmes of Port 
Arthur, son of the dead man, filed the charge with A. L. Hudiburgh, justice of 
the peace. Beaty was arrested, waived examining, trial, and made bond of $1000.

Holes died Monday night at his home from gunshot wounds, which he received New 
Year's Day when Beaty shot him at the front of J. M. Orton & Son drug store. 
Holmes was treated at the Hardy-Hancock Hospital at the time of the shooting and 
removed to his home. The bullet entered his jaw, breaking it, tore away several 
teeth and embedded itself in two pieces in the jaw. He seemed to be recovering 
up until a day of [sic] so before his death.

The origin of the trouble is said to be a law suit in which the principals were 
involved. The shooting was the result of several days disagreement, it is 
alleged.

Holmes is survived by his wife, five sons and three girls. The sons, all of whom 
live in Port Arthur, are: Jethro, Corbitt, William, A. D. and Jappie. The 
daughters are Mrs. Warren Blankenship of Jasper and Mrs. Ivy Birdwell of Port 
Arthur.

Funeral services were held for him Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home, 
with the Rev. A. A. Tharp officiating. Burial was to have been buried at 
Grigsby, Shelby county, but the roads were in too bad condition.

Holmes, who was 62 years old, was born in San Augustine county, but had lived 
here for the last eleven years.
