All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/tx/jones/jonestoc.htm *********************************************************** The Stamford American Thursday, August 4, 1927 Nugent has Well-Equipped School Nugent School District No. 25 has about $13,000.00 outstanding bonded indebtedness. Valuation $243,068. The local tax is 60c and the bond tax 40c on the $100.00 valuation of taxable property. Its area is about 23 square miles, the building is located 19 miles southeast of Anson. This district was organized in 1892, first school in district was located about three-fourths mile from present site and called Green Valley, a one room building, a few years later was consolidated with Rising Sun district and located a building about 20 feet from where the present building stands, this site being purchased from Mr. John Roberts. As population increased the demand for a larger building became evident, so this building being sold to Church of Christ and through a bond issue of $2,000 another building was erected on the present site. It being destroyed by fire in 1922. Through a bond issue of $12,000.00 the present building a two-story brick, with six class rooms and an auditorium, was erected. The present trustees are J.M. Higgs, Joe Myatt and C.H. Moore; teachers are Mr. Chancey Garrison, Mrs. Chauncey Garrison, Geraldine Lewis and Lottie Lewis. The town of Nugent dates back to early history of Jones County, some of the countyÕs oldest residents settled near here. The first house was built in 1876, lumber being freighted from Fort Worth, and its transportation cost three times as much as the original cost. The town received its name from a Mr. Nugent, a candidate for governor of Texas, running on the Populist ticket, but died before the election. The first store was owned by R.D. Jefferies and used as a store, post office and residence, he being the first postmaster. The main first reached Nugent by way of Star Route from Abilene, coming first to Rising Sun, thence to Nugent. Mr. Ebb Reynolds being the carrier. This town is situated not far from the historic Chisolm Trail, over which many herds of cattle were driven to the Kansas markets. The first phone was located to Mr. Bill GroomÕs home and the first person to talk over it was Mrs. Arnold. Dr. Goodwin was our first physician have had three since. Dr. H.F. Lewis is our present one and is a member of County Board of Trustees. The thriving little town was destroyed by fire a few years back and since has not regained her commercial standing. She now has a population of 94. A general merchandise store, a garage, post office, three churches and a blacksmith shop.
