Williams Dr. Witt was the father of Lt. Gov. Edgar E. Witt Dr. McCarty Early Day Merchants in Anson: R.H. Foard K.C. Kirby L.N. Hines S.C. Hines J.H. Naler H.C. Hale, who had three livery stables at one time J.L. Nevill T.B. Holderness B.F. Bailey W.C. Bryant J.C. Bryant George H. Baker R.L. Penick Jeff Martin Jack Nichols L.M. Buie Ed Kennedy H.D. Williams Bill Williams Dave Wood L.E. Steed S.W. Lackey Bob Roland Will Treadwell John Davis Lige Davis Charley Roland. Thomas Jefferson Barrett came to Jones County in 1889. He served as a member of the Legislature from this district. He died in 1928 in Anson. His brohter, R.J. Barrett, who now operates a hardware and grocery store has been in business continually for 32 years. The late J.H. Barrett, former Anson busines man and mayor, was also a brother of Thomas Jefferson. T.D. Goodwin came to Anson from Kentucky in the early 1880s. He served as a county official and owned a hardware store here at one time. He died here last fall. A brother, R.S. Goodwin came to anson early in 1883. He worked on varous ranches at first and later was employed in the hardware business for yeras. He is now nightwatchman for the city of Anson. Another of the brothers, Frank, came here many years after their arrival. He owned considerable property in and near Anson. He was buried here last Fall. Cafes of the county: Pittman Cafe in Anson was established by the late G.M. Pittman in 1901 and is now operated by his daughter, Miss Ruby Pittman. J.P. Siler of Plainview ranks as one of the pioneer barbers of Anson, his place being taken later by Bud Farmer and Dew Womack and C.A. McCarter. L.E. Steed came to Jones county in about 1891, where he was interested with the Bailey Store in Anson until 1896, when he and J.E. Robinson bought the store, one of the oldest in Jones county. Steed's name is still connected with the business, which is now Steed and Bonner. Mr. Steed raised a family of eight daughter, some of them living in Anson at this time. C. Spurling came from Illinois to Jones county in 1885, and followed freighting with Mr. Kennedy for a while before moving to a farm. George Castles and his sons, Sid and Mack, also rank among the old-timers. George Castles was tax assessor of Jones County at one time. He and Mrs. Castles and Mack are dead. Sid lives in Anson. Another brother lives in Abilene. C.A. Robinson and family were also a pioneer Anson family. J.E. Robinson lives in Anson. Other children live in Jayton. Bake Robinson lives in Stamford. J.C. Warren family came to Anson in 1885. Mr. Warren served as county commissioner for precinct 1 after 1900. He died several years back.
