All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************** The Western Enterprise Anson, Jones County, Texas Thursday, August 26, 1933 50th Anniversary Edition ANSON PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH ORGANIZED IN 1909 The Anson Primitive Baptist church was oragnized 5 September 1909. The presbytery consistted of Elders: A.V. Atkins E.R. Roberson H.C. Marcum Charter members were: Mary E. Johnson W.T. Sorrels and wife Elder R.V. Sorrells Elder J.W. Adams and wife Mrs. J.M. Morrow With these members the church was organized and went at once into conference and received the following members: W.W. Anderson and wife Mrs. R.E. Thomas and wife M.E. Parish R.L. Barrett The name, the Anson Primitive Baptist church, was selected. October 16, 1909, the first moderator or pastor was chosen: Elder H.C. Marcum and clerk, R.L. Barrett. Elder R.V. Sorrels served as pastor from November 1913 to March 1914 Elder J.B. Downing served as pastor from September 1914 to 1918 Elder W.L. Barrett began pastor from 14 December 1918 and held it for several years. Elder J.B. Owens was called to serve jointly with Mr. Barrett in September 1920 Present pastor: elder J.W. West was called 17 May 1930. Membership of the church is 68. The church purchased the old Methodist building on one block east of Commercial avenue and two blocks north of the court house in 1910, and have occupied at as a church home since.
