Colbert came to Jones County from Mt. Lebanon, Lousiana, in 1883, when he was only 16 years old. His first job was grubbing mesquite for Ike Hudson. Soon after he herded sheep for a Mr. Northington. In his early days he was a cowboy for the T-Diamond Horse Shoe, and L I L ranches. He set type for the Texas-Western in its early days. Later he served as deputy clerk under John Ferguson, this job being promised him when he learned to write a good hand. From 1890 to 1894 he served as County Clerk. The Jones County Bank was organized in 1894 by Mr. Colbert. This bank is now the First National Bank of Anson. He engaged in the stock business for many years, raising Herefords. He gives the Cranstons credit for introducing fine blooded cattle in this section of the country. In 1900, Colbert went to Stamford where he has lived since. Some years ago Mr. Colbert was president of the National Hereford Association. His sister, Miss Johnnie Colbert, came here about the year 1890, and has contributed much to the civic and educational life of Anson and other places, as a teacher and civic worker.
