He was foreman of the Sam Lazarus ranch on Spring Creek and his duties necessitated him getting out in the snow. It was accompanied by a severe storm and there was considerable live stock loss. He recalled that Dr. Jim Alexander, now leading surgeon and physician of Abilene and West Texas was doing a regulation practice then and made his calls horseback or in a buggy. The doctor was out in the neighborhood of the ranch when the storm struck and he became badly lost but finally wound up against one of the ranch fences. Mr. Meeker says the following crop season was the best the country had enjoyed for years and grass came early and was fine. Uncle Ben Cullum, implement salesman for Penick-Hughes Co. was reminiscent Wednesday and talked old times and about other snow storms. He told about the big snow in 1899. He was on a ranch then about 30 miles northwest of Stamford, close to old Rayner where Baldwinís ranch now is. It began snowing at day light and by night had attained a depth of about a foot but drifted badly and was a cold dry snow. The sun never came out for 18 days and it was bitterly cold. It was over 30 day before the snow melted. He came into the country here in 1882 and can tell many interesting stories of the early days. He went up the Trail with herds to the Dakotas three times during the 1880s. In 1885, he went from Albany to Springer, New Mexico, and received a herd and drove them to Dakota and never crossed a fence nor saw one on the entire route. By 1888 there were many fences all the way up the country. On Monday morning at 10:00 Mrs. Dan Chambers, living at the Rockdale community passed away.
