Kirby vs. Edgar Boaz, trespass to try title, passed Monday, Jan. 16th. Hickey murder case in Haskell county. L. Berry vs. J.T. Huddleston, trespass to try title. A. Goodwin vs. Carrie Goodwin, suit for divorce, passed Jan. 4th. The case of Mrs. Winters vs. Terrell of Dallas, suit for malpractice and $20,000 damages. The case of the State of Texas vs. Al Chambers from Scurry County charged with murder in second degree, on trial and will likely terminate tomorrow. W.P. Clifford an old citizen of Jones county, but for the last two years has been living in Terry county, was in town this week. Monday evening of last week R.H. Lankford and the editor left for the river on a turkey hunt. At the camp Mr. Buie and Mr. Yantis amused themselves by tying pecans by a string in the wind and shooting them out with a target rifle, which they did nearly every shot, while Mr. Langford and the writer amused themselves trying to do it. Tuesday night, January 3, 1905, at 8:30, in the First Baptist church. Mr. D.I. Herndon and Miss Nollie Ashburn were married, Elder J.P. Siler, officiating. Mr. Herndon has a position in the Watson-Russell wholesale grocery house. Miss Nollie is a very popular young lady and has held a position with Baker-Bryant Co., for several years. Promptly at the time announce, Messrs. Walter Orr and J.M. Prude, followed by the bride and Miss Fannie Lyle, came down the left side, and at the same time Messrs. Chas. Penick and W.A.LaFon followed by the groom and W.H. Payne came down the right aisle meeting at the altar. School Notes Mr. McDonald spent the holidays at Rogers’ Prairie. Pattie Blanchett has returned to school. Ethel Moore has made a very good New Year’s resolution. A book was given as a prize to Inez Keeling for the best map of the United States. Lilias Penick has written all of her compositions to the present time. Prof. Oder, superintendent of Anson High school, visited our school Wednesday afternoon. Personal Summer Hudson left on the train for the Texas Christian University at Waco. G.W. Bills left yesterday for the Plains. John Walker of Cisco came in on yesterday evening’s train enroute to Haskell. Barton Penn went to Dallas for a business course. A.B. Burns renewed subscription. Hugh Ezell, bookkeeper for J.E. Raines at Albany in Stamford. Mrs. L.A. Raines, recently of Bowie has taken charge of the J.E. Raines & Co Store in Stamford. Mr. L.T. Key of Alabama is in Stamford prospecting. J.C. Futrell, the first subscriber to the Stamford news, and who lives in the Abbie neighborhood was in town this week with cotton. All local unions north of the Shinery are requested to send delegates to Stamford for organizing a district union. W.E. Matthews and family will leave this week so he informs us, for their new home in Stamford, Texas, where Mr. Matthews will be on January 1st assume the management of a wholesale grocery establishment. Their many friends in Pecos are sorry to see them leave. -- Pecos Times Capt. J.B. Carnahan was in our office renewing his subscription. The Capt. told us that he is offering his farm for sale. The Captain is wanting to go back to his old business, that of railroad building. He is one of the oldest railroad constructionists in the South, having built some of the trunk lines in this and other states. He lives a few miles south of Stamford. Mr. J.A. Medlen has recently purchased a residence in Stamford and has moved his family here. They are from Blooming Grove. Stamford City Council Meeting City Council met in call session, Dec. 25th, 1904, at city hall with the following alderman present: J.R. Sledge, J.P. McDaniel, W.E. Leake and H.T. Penn. Mayor R.L. Penick in the chair. Meeting was called for the purpose of electing a night watch and deputy marshal to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of R.S. Ragsdale. J.R. Owens was nominated and unanimously elected. The One Price Cash Grocer Larche & Ham West side square, Stamford, Texas Jan. 13, 1905 Vol. 5, No. 46 W.J. Galbraith came in our office and placed his son Claud as a subscriber. Mr. Galbraith is an old timer in Jones county, having settled south of town 15 years ago. The Shareholder’s of the First National Bank, Jan. 10, elected the following officers for the ensuing year: Directors: W.D. Reynolds, G.T. Reynolds, Chas. Hamilton, R.L. Penick, J.C. Bryant, D.O. There have been very few changes in the business of Stamford for the new year. G.P. Whiteside has moved to Ennis, and I.M. Lively has moved his jewelry store into the room that was occupied by his restaurant. Frank Esary has boxed his racket stock, and these are the holy changes we know of. The Merkel Mail comes to us with the names of Messrs. J.M. Fry and H.T. Merritt as editors and proprietors. Mr. Ed. J. Leeman having sold the paper to them, announces he will leave Merkel. Last Friday night, in its lodge room, the Stamford W.O.W. Camp installed its officers. P.G. Stanford of Anson was installing officer and delivered an eloquent address. The following are the officers installed: J.H. Whittington, council commander; J.O. Moore, advisory lieutenant; J.A. Lackey, banker; Oscar Cooper, clerk; W.E. Whitfield, escort; J.J. Stephens, watchman; J.R. Mart; W.F. Bullington, J.F. Duncan. From McCaulley Jan, 5, 1905 C.L. Pipkin has bought an interest at Roby and will close out his grocery business at this place. Our merchants are hoping and preparing for a larger trade this year than last, and our town expects to support a paper, the McCaulley Messenger, the first to come out this, 13th day of January, so we are making some progress. Death of Grandma Davis Grandma Davis died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.C. Hale of this city, after an illness of some time. She had been in delicate health for several months. The funeral services were conducted at the residence Thursday at 12 o’clock by Rev. Ward of the Baptist church. [L.C. Dabney, MD; Granbury, TX to Jones County Clerk; ] Mrs. Kate Twells Beach Mrs. Kate Twells Beach died in Galveston last Tuesday. Mrs. Beach was the mother of Mrs. M.T. Hall, and was well known in Stamford, having made her home with her daughter for some time. Mrs. Beach was a noted music teacher in Texas for many years. The Stamford Jewelry Store moved to the north side of the square to the old storeroom of Smith Drug Co. Local Sheriff Collins brought a man named Beavers over from Haskell Tuesday morning and left on the train with him for Abilene to put him in jail there for safekeeping. He broke out of the Haskell jail a short time ago and was caught at Crowell. He is charged with horse stealing. A Royal Arch Chapter has been organized in Stamford with the following officers: J.L. Lockett, High Priest; J.O. Kelly, Ex-King; T.M. Baxter, Scribe. Ex-Sheriff Holcomb of Shackelford county has been in Stamford on business this week. Anson Allsorts There were 33 licenses issued during the month of December and up to date this month there have been 10 licenses issued as follows: To Santiago Alvarada and Miss Maria Erera, J.A. Goodwin and Miss Laura Rawlings, Bailey Hock and Miss Anna Pearl Fry, M.B. Savage and Miss L.A. Gamble, George E. Robinson and Miss Jessie M. Clark, Frank L. Nixon and Miss Connie R. Warren, Chas. Oren and Miss Lula M. Crabtree, E.C. Bailey and Miss Lallie Ira Davis, Bert Jones and Miss Anna Hackney, Grayson Anderson and Miss Emma Short. District court is still grinding away. The Hickey murder case trial is having troubles. Eleven members of the jury were for hanging Hickey, and one for a life sentence at first, and later in the deliberation of the jury some disagreement arose, and the life sentence man wanted to turn him loose. Several civil cases have been before the court this week, among one which is the old rock quarry case that has been pending two or three years. Our new schoolhouse will be underway. The rock for the foundation is now being placed on the ground. Partin Scott & Partin are doing some improving on their grocery store, covering the roof and walls with iron roofing.
